The Democrats invested into identity politics because that's what cultural Marxism did once it lost the economic arguments. When the poor in western societies had an obesity problem that became their main angle....the oppressed/oppressor narrative. They did it to cement their minorities vote as well. It was feeding the tiger, because for every action there is a reaction and now you have a growing white identity movement. The progressives seem to think that they can be openly racist to whites, especially men and that it's all going to be ok. So now they label this movement as Nazis...their 'influencers' call people like Steve Bannon fascists and Nazis......even though it was their identity politics which created the opposition as it didn't exist in any numbers before. Trump happened partly out of a reaction to them. If you have identity politics you can't pick and choose. It's identity politics for all or no one......but personally I think it's too late now. The cat's out of the bag and it's not going to be pretty.

My tuppence worth. I believe that the democrats were originally conservative (small c) and largely slave owners. The Republican party was created out of the anti abolitionist movement and was originally a radical party. At some point in their history I think the parties swapped over to what they are now. I suspect that Teddy Roosevelt and FDR would have had a lot to do with that. The Democrats under them becoming the radical party and the Republicans entrenching in opposition to that. Just a thought.

It's a misconception that the democratic party is left or socialist as we understand in Europe.
