Buy something that you know your good lady will love and cherish bud.

All the best.

Agreed. Make the effort that's what counts. Go to Hatton Garden or anywhere not local to you. If she believes that you spent some time and effort that will mean more than the actual cost of the ring. Its why women have the hump with flowers from the petrol garage. Its not the flowers but that they were an after thought whilst you got petrol. Buy the same flowers from a proper florist and she is happy.

Flowers are if you've been a naughty boy.
It don't matter where they're from.
And you won't earn a rub out by buying them

I'd let her chose the ring.

Remember, she wants something to show off to her mates/work colleagues/family.

Getting something she doesn't want will cost you ££ and lose all your bonus points. You will be in negative equity for life. The BJ's will stop and her lady-garden will heal up.

The only thing she will do is a hand-job, and that will be quick and violent.

Let her chose the ring, else give some more thought

What's the going rate I.e. price you'd spend which wouldn't be cheap but also not overboard ?

Spend what you can afford and it's probably best to go with her to buy it. I think I spent £600 in 1990 which is about £1200 now. It was 2nd hand, or vintage and bought after going round all the jewellery shops in Brighton.

It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses.

If you want to do the whole, down on one knee, romantic proposal bit, you could always find out her ring size and get her one of these (or similar) to do the actual proposing with, and then buy the real thing together later less than £20 quid, but it shows a bit of thought.....

Spend what you can afford mate, but remember there will be no more important piece of jewellery that she will want to wear and show everyone, so it's worth pushing the boat out but not bankrupting yourself.

Assuming you're buying diamonds, do your research about the 4 Cs, but then as others have said, go to Hatton Garden and go into several different shops so see the difference the 4 Cs actually make and how that reflects cost/appearance. I just found this link in my Bookmarks from when I was looking a few years ago:

Some tips - steal a ring that she doesn't wear to get an idea of size. Make up a story about a girl at work having a hideous engagement ring to broach a conversation about your (hopefully) future Mrs' taste in rings - including gold, white gold or platinum.

There is no limit, in my opinion - get a ring you think she will like and look good on her finger - if that doesn't please her, then she isn't worth it.

that's a nice touch and something i thought about - unfortunately my wife has larger hands (still feminine... just lol) and all rings looked tiny on her - i spent 7k on her ring, only because i won some money - would have spent about 1k otherwise, but bought it through a wholesaler pal of mine and had it made custom and it's actually worth 17k now - it looks amazing and she will never get any jewellery off me again.

However, diamonds are the biggest scam going and worthless. Sad but true.

Hula Hoops. Pick her favourite flavour and you have a whole bag of rings for under a quid.

That way if she gets peckish and eats one lo and behold you have another!

They even sell giant hoops now, ideal for the fuller fingered lady(boy) of your drunken far eastern holiday.

But on a serious note engagement rings are cheap compared to an eternity ring, after many years of marriage looking for one and a decent one costs.

If not then pull yourself together and don't be so f@cking stupid man

I've been engaged for 3 and a half years - it's a bit like being in Europe but not in the Euro, you could just give her a checque worth half of everything you own, at least that would save you the expense of buying a ring.
