Wonder how much it would cost to implement; I also wonder which MPs would be directors of the companies that got the contract to make them? Using passports as a guideline, one would think it wouldn't be long before it costs £100 to get your compulsory ID card. Another pointless tax. No doubt MPs ones will be free or charged to expenses.

How many switch their phones off? - virtually no one. The issue of introducing ID cards into Britain has been going on since the end of the second world war I believe, not sure but a connection to the past?

I never get the cost part. Surely you could download an app which has a basic template which you fill in? Name, DOB,Place of Birth Etc & have it installed on your cell phone.

Suspiciously !! Ahh ok so that's how I know if someone has a knife. Or maybe just random I'D checks which would be the law to provide apon being asked by the police. OB can do all that already through stop and search and without recourse to an ID card by simply talking on the radio to the station and getting a run down on the person stopped. What you're suggesting seems to be that people should be arrested merely because OB think they might be about to commit a crime or have a record. The phrase "protective custody", a technique favoured by the Gestapo seems to spring to mind. Is that what you want?

The state has all of this information and more already. Id cards don't add to that at all. What they do is deter a lot more crime than without. I've had id cards for more than 25 years, guess what? - no one has stolen my identity, no one has stopped me for no reason, in fact it's been completely hassle free. Too much conspiracy theories from those with no experience of them. Actually, at the time, they didn't. Biometric passports either didn't exist, or were in very small circulation. The Labour ID cards were intending to have biometric data stored on them. I objected at the time, based on privacy and along the same lines as Cucking here. That said, gvien that they likely have this data for any new passports issued, it's a moot point somewhat. If it helps prevent abuse of public services, and indeeed facilitates job right-to-work searches, then meh. Caveat: it'll likely cost more than HS2 knowing both this government and the loony-bin waiting to swoop in.

I am in favour of ID cards although the previous system was an unnecessary mess. At the last election I checked voter id's in Bromley. Three quarters of the people showed me their photo id driving licence. Several of them explained that they don't try but use it as a convenient form of ID. I don't driver either but the next day I applied and got a leaner driver id it has all the info the state needs. So why not expand the current DL system to include an option that is ID only that should not be too expensive. As to citizen's rights anyway who is on the electoral role, has a bank account or credit card and pays taxes then the state already has your data. The big issue for me is should the police be able to demand someone produce their ID without any justification. I would need convincing on this point and I don't believe the politicians would approve that. Other than that it is much ado about nothing.
