I have't seen a thread elsewhere so excuse me if already posted. What a courageous and brave act to speak out about such a sensitive yet damming topic that has been divisive in the media of late. To reveal the struggles of his personal life is truly commendable, and especially important during a time where 1 in 4 young males are depressed & where 1 in 5 teens have considered suicide. I really hope this helps to propagate the problems in our society of mental health, and helps more to come forward.

Agreed - really brave of him to speak out so publicly and candidly. Like you say, hope it encourages others suffering to talk to someone and that it's OK not to be OK.

Mental health is still all too frequently overlooked as I have witnessed in education with other colleagues who haven't been given anything like the care and support required. All too often we treat teachers like we treat pupils as mere statistics. Health and wellbeing for employees within the workplace needs a complete overhaul and it will enhance productivity. Well done Danny for making his condition public - depression can affect anybody at any time.

Surprised this thread hasn’t got more attention. Still does seem to be a topic people don’t really want to talk about.

The pressures of professional sport are very unique with the enormous pressure and scrutiny on players week in week out. Mistakes are magnified and players carry the aspirations of fans on their shoulders. It’s no wonder mental health issues are so prevalent in professional athletes. Rose as a young black Englishman in his prime is showing his vulnerability and being incredibly brave, I’m sure it will help others have the confidence to seek help. The tragedy is that mental health services are under immense pressure as we have a huge mental health crisis at the moment particularly with young people, and the services do not have the resources to deal with it. How many people struggling will go to seek help, and not find the structures in place capable of giving it.

I am not surprised that people in the public eye suffer from depression. In fact I am more amazed that there are those who can cope with the highs and the lows. Imagine you are a footballer on a Saturday afternoon thousands are cheering your name and yet a couple of hours later you are siting at home alone, what next? Or you have a great game followed by a stinker, will you get your form back? What if you are a musician and you write a hit record, you ride the high but then can you do it again? I suspect unlike the rest of us doing our jobs these folk swing from huge highs to lows very quickly. No wonder when they retire it leaves a gaping hole in their lives. Anyway good luck to Danny brave lad to come forward.

Really brave to go public. It can be cathartic to admit to friends and colleagues that you suffer from depression. I have for many years but the job I'm in at present is the first I have felt comfortable with to let everyone know about my condition and, on the whole, the experience has been excellent.
