according to this site we first wore read and blue stripes in 1937/38 ... our own site says the stripes were claret and blue back then, be nice if our current colours did have pre-war roots, though I really like our colours I don't like junking history, Big Mal was all about rebranding into some family oriented pseudo American image, with nicknames more suited to basketball teams and all that, the old calret and blue pinstripes had a sort of pearly king windy uppy piano with a monkey on and punched holes in the the music score sheet traditionalism about it ... I was sure I've seen this on 'club colours before, my soul would be more restful if we were red and blue back in the day, but there again i am a bit of an a*sehole.

I think probably coincidence, from what I remember in "Big Mal's" first full season as part of the re-branding he stole the shirts idea from Barcelona and the Eagle motif from Benfica.
