Am I the only one who doesn’t feel we need a lot? A bit of continuity would be very welcome after recent summers. Guaita and an attack mid - Shaquiri would be the dream - and I think we’d be in a very strong position going in to next season.

Fair point. Like more options in front of goal, a tricky running heads down type with a good finish. I'll look at the wisdom in transfer talk over the summer for this.

I was just listing the players who are out of contract. We have not got a good record of being able to offload our unwanted squad players.

As for Kelly and Ward. It's controversial but I would keep Kelly and release Ward if its a choice between the two as Kelly is more versatile.

Well that was a sudden change of heart

25 man squad:

GK: Hennessy (new contract), Guaita, Henry (20)

Defenders: AWB (20), Ward (new contract), Dann, Sakho, Tomkins, PVA, Souare, Kelly (new contract), Jach

Midfield: Schlupp, McArthur (new contract), Andros, Wilf, Cabaye (new contract), Reidewald, Sako (new contract), Luka, Puncheon

Forwards: Tekkers, Sorloth, Wickham

= 22

We can add Lokilo (19), Kirby - 18, Lumeka (19) and Daly - 18 without affecting the squad number.

Released: Speroni, Delaney and Lee.
Loan finished: RLC, TFM, Rakip
Sell: Mutch, Williams, Kaikai

On this basis we would have 3 slots available. We could go for two decent loans again and one purchase. I wouldn't mind RLC on loan again for a season. The other loan could be a striker (Tammy Abraham?)although if Sako stays it would be interesting to see if he could develop further in that role. A further midfielder could be a good purchase option and if we only buy one player presumably we could buy quality?

I would not put too much emphasis on Jach stepping up to PL level too soon. He didn't look too outstanding playing for the development squad.

I can see Kelly getting a new contract. Ward's injury may have scuppered any new contract.

I'll clarify. My preference is we get rid of both, if it i a choice between one or the other I'd choose Kelly. No change of heart needed

Or a reduced rate. Now I see Hodgson's cunning plan in not playing Wan-Bissaka

Ward is an odd one. Still only 28 but appears a lesser player than when we first got promoted. Of course relatively playing alongside Delaney and Gabbidon v Sakho and Tomkins could explain it

I can see Roy going back in for Amadou in the summer. He seemed disappointed that we missed out on him

Yes that's what I think too. The question is where do we need to strengthen in that squad whilst still giving the U23s a chance?

I think we need cover on the wings and a creative midfielder, Shaqiri is both but I worry that he's a bit of a tosspot. Maybe Roy and the squad would bring the best out of him as a person as well as a player.

I hope it's okay to post this here, as a single location for discussion about this summer's transfer window. Apologies if it's not - the moderators can lock it.

What do people think our net spend this summer will be? I saw one post suggesting we're already up against the FFP buffers and so players will have to leave before others join. I feel that's pessimistic, but I could easily see a net spend of, say, only £10 million. That sort of outlay might not be super appealing to the likes of Wilf.

Broadly speaking, what do you think a genuinely realistic window looks like for us? We're clearly still not fantastic at scouting -- but then again when you look at the teams struggling, you realize it's a harder skill than many would credit.

If we're recruiting, what sort of expenditures do you think we need for the positions in question? And do you think we will actually spend that money?

We bid about £16 mil for Adamou in January plus were prepared to pay a few mil on keepers and you think we’ll make a net spend of £10 mil. Who can we sell who is worth anything we want to and can afford to lose? Virtually nobody.

The general level of net spend available in the bottom half is over £40 million. Spend much less than that without the desired tools and you go down. We all know we need a couple of quality players through the middle whether Cabaye stays or goes. That costs more than £10 mil and I expect we’ll spend more than £30 mil. How much I wouldn’t know.

I think the reality is that FFP does hit us hard and I think many fans find this hard to take. I think it is FFP that is capping our transfer activity and not Parrish as many on here would like to believe.

It harks back to the January of Big Sam when he bought in Sakho, Schlupp, PVA and Milivojevic. I seem to recall it being said we spent the following summers transfer budget then. We have been paying back for this ever since and culminated in the January's window in which only Sorloth was bought in, much to many's disgust. People were clamoring we spend an extra 4-8 mill to bring Guiata in earlier than the end of the contract and we didn't (probably due to cost and it has certainly proved the right decision as we have not been relegated due to WH).

So, we have a lot of `deadwood` in the squad and it has proved difficult to clear these out: Lee, Mutch etc. A lot will depend on how much wages can be shed by not renewing contracts and if we can actually ell any fringe players.

We didn’t spend all of the summer 2017 budget in January 2017 but we certainly dipped into it. If you remember our net spend in the summer of 2016 after Bolasie leaving and Townsend, Tomko and Benteke coming in was £10 mil and partly why we were in such a mess. So we ended up spending what we should’ve done 5 months earlier and probably ate up about maybe £10 mil+ of our 17/18 budget.

The wage bill is probably an issue and hopefully with Freedman and Roy we can target cheaper wage players.
