Went through the back of him to get to the ball, no complaint about the penalty. Buffon just made a fool of himself. Even more so when he did his interview today saying that the "ref should know what happened in the first leg" like he's there to rectify supposedly aggrieved decisions in a game he wasn't involved in. He then goes on to say that "he should have a certain sensitivity as there are some of the best players in the world on the pitch" And proceeds to list "Ronaldo, then himself, Navas and Chiellini" - as if they deserve special treatment. With respect Stuk...what a load of bollocks..."went through the back of him"?....I actually burst out laughing then. i agree that we no longer live in an age where we watch a contact sport but that's just taking the piss....it did make me smile though so thank you for that

Surely this thread proves that even after the benefit of replays people still have opposing views and therefore how on earth can the penalty be awarded at such a pivotal point in the game?

This shows how difficult it is for referees.Referees can only give what they see from their angle and of course from a different angle the incident could look quite different. I thought Oliver was spot-on with his decision to award a penalty but he won't be taking a holiday in Turin any time soon ! Edited by Willo (13 Apr 2018 4.02pm)

The point in the game was irrelevant, if he'd given a penalty in the 33rd minute the result would be the same. Juve would still be out, in fact they might have got battered having a man sent off that early.

Over the years I have heard some hogwash on the grounds of "It was so late in the game, did he need to be sent off" etc etc etc.Yes - the game was still in progress and the laws apply until the final whistle.

Nonsense, he's saying it's a clear penalty but with the benefit of YouTube slow replays and different angles, if anything your proving it wasn't clear! The player has gone down far too easy for me and under the circumstances only for an obvious foul should the pen be given Would he have given it the other way? That would have taken real balls, no, he made the popular decision Sponsors can't have Barca and real eliminated in the same week ! Edited by Pussay Patrol (12 Apr 2018 4.46pm) Its not about going down to easy, its about the fact the the Italian defender timed his shove perfectly at the point when Vazquez was chesting the ball, pusshing the player into the ball and ensuring the ball goes toward Buffon. So if the player goes down or not, its a penalty.

Yes I agree. Oliver would have been severely criticised if he HADN'T awarded the penalty.

Well considering Buffon expected him to rectify what he felt were errors against them in the first leg, that was nothing to do with him, it's not surprising that they choose to focus on the timing of it rather than trying to justify why it wasn't a foul.

Yes people do have opposing views about it and personally mine was that it was a penalty. However, it was the ref who had to make a decision at the time and he decided to blow for the penalty so his became, and rightly so, the pertinent decision. If the decision is an either/or one, which it seems to be given the amount of debate, then his decision was the choice he made as the official match referee. There is no consensus that it was completely wrong so he made a decision that needed to be made at the time. Juve hated it whilst Real loved it. So it will always be where decisions are not clear cut. We have benefited from such choices and also been disadvantaged by them.

Didn’t think it was a penalty at the time or after several replays. Forward failed to make his mind up what to do with the ball and went to ground. Defender tried to get his body in and make it difficult. Contact sport and ref needs to be certain before giving it which he can’t hav3 been.
