Yeah but you don't learn to drive in the first seven days, it is assumed people become good drivers with years of experience, the test is just to show you are safe and not a complete numpty I did say 'in principle'

Forest Hillbilly in a hidey-hole 16 Feb 18 4.13pm | |

30 years ago my Welsh girlfriend introduced to me her one-armed grand dad. (his right arm was missing at the shoulder) Anyone who gets a motorbike in their middle-age, without taking a refresher course, is highly likely to have a prang. And it's the biker who comes off worst. As for Missus Hillbilly, she is going to amend her course, so that she gathers a lot more experience and confidence over a longer length of time. Aside from the obvious humour, someone could have been badly injured, or a pedestrian very likely killed.
I disengage, I turn the page. |

Maybe, I dunno, my old dad back in the day said in the sixties he had to hold the car on the biting point on a hill whilst not driving over two match boxes placed under the front and rear car tyres for five mins. Only then did he pass I didn’t have anything like that in the 70s.

Incidentally my first driving instructor had to stop instructing me because he was picked up doing 110 on the M77 on a motorbike and banned from driving for 18 months. The irony is that he was always telling me off for "not making progress", i.e. driving too slowly.

My instructor used to get out of the car to confront and fight anyone with a French number plate or country badge. His missus had left him for a French guy. Sometimes we would drink instead of having lessons. He was going through a bad time.

I passed my test in 1964, first time, and it was necessary to demonstrate the understanding of the clutch biting point by not rolling backwards on a hill start. However I'd have thought the clutch would burn out if held for any length of time without moving off. Modern cars now come with "hill start assist" and motorbikes can have "autoblippers". Obviously for drivers with no clutch control and bikers unable to downshift smoothly.
