Mods: please move if wrong area.

I use NewsNow to get latest Palace stories, and followed a link to a story on "Read Crystal Palace" site and something flashed up before the story appeared.
I then got a text saying I had subscribed to a £4.50 per week service, which I patently had not. Tried checking with my operator Three and they advised me to send STOP message to the number quoted and they gave me contact details for the source of the text. They said it will cost me 10p to send that text. 10p is obviously better than £4.50 but still annoys me that they can get away with this scam.
I've written to the scam company asking for refund and asking for them to remove my details from their records - saying I will make a Subject Access Request under Data Protection Act if they do not respond.
Don't hold out much hope, but thought I would alert fellow fans to this scam. If anyone knows who runs Read Crystal Palace, might be worth letting them know. Be careful out there...

Might be a silly question, but how do they know your mobile number to send these messages to you if you haven't given it to them (which I'm assuming you haven't if you just used your phone to access their website)?

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

It's a good question. Did you give them your mobile number. Only I ask as my daughter has been charged the same amount on her bill and swears blind she didn't.

I have prepared one of my own time capsules. I have placed some rather large samples of dynamite, gunpowder and nitroglycerin. My time capsule is set to go off in the year 3000. It will show them what we are really like.

For £4.50 p/w I'd expect pictures of Bellyman's missus.

Well worth the money. She's as fit as a butcher's dog.

Morning all.
Nope definitely didn't give my number.
As I said something just flashed up, no time to acknowledge it or anything, so I have some sympathy with Oliver's daughter.
I've been in IT all my career, so am not naive when it comes to these things, and a bit confused how they could get my number - it shouldn't be possible from a website without explicit permission given. It can't be coincidence though. I'm going to do some research (well, googleise it!) and continue to chase the company.
It's only 10p this time but I've already seen stories of people racking up bills unaware of this.

Cheers.

COYP.

O2 and associated networks were leaking mobile numbers via http headers a few years ago. Access a site through 3g/4g was giving the site your mobile.

Very unlikely as a long time ago but if you've used the site for a while and login it may have grabbed it. Or they have affiliates they share data with.

Some data mining is quite scary!
