Precisely. Leverage and your willingness/ability to pay over the odds. Look at last year's top dollar purchases of PvA/Schlupp. We got them quickly because we paid over the odds but we also had leverage. PvA could see the ship was sinking and Schlupp just wanted out of City. When we lack leverage, splashing the cash doesn't always work. Well PVA and Schlupp are essential to us, as are Luka and Sakho who was initially on loan, all Big Sam's signings. They gave a fillip to us and we avoided the drop. In the absence of youth coming through then we have to spend. However all the money we spent then would now only get you a 'Van Dilk' !!!!! Perhaps Dougie can find another Damien Delaney, I think he just turned up looking for a game?

There is no argument (unless you are ignorant of the facts) to dispute Palace's woeful record in the transfer market. It is public knowledge conceded by Parish himself and don't ask me to do your research please YOU google it. All this talk about 'how do you know this?' and 'how do you know that?' and maybe this and maybe that and maybe you're judging Parish too harshly...load of codswallop! OTHER teams (of our standing) have the same circumstances and they get the deals done. Parish has said himself that he likes to leave things until the last minute. That may work in commerce (especially with the leverage as CEO of Neteller) but not in the PL transfer market. Yes you have to be firm and maybe not do a deal occasionally if their agents are being silly, but if you are a good operater, you will know the numbers and close the deal. Well it's good to see we've already started negotiations for a CB and it's only Jan 3rd. Hopefully he's learning...

You also have the issue of going too early and putting other players in the shop window for other teams. I am sure that players and agents are more than happy to talk to Palace about a move, safe in the knowledge that they have a premiership team waiting in the wings on the off chance that one of Europe's relatively bigger teams don't step in. Our competition for signings seems to have moved upwards from Hull et al a few years ago, to West Brom etc now, but there is still competition.

West Brom are now just Hull with a manager who can't tell the difference between a striker and Bumfluff.

I don't think Benteke was carried over the threshold early in proceedings. In fact, the only times I can recollect us getting the January transfer business done reasonably early was last year and before under Pulis' reign. I thought last January our transfers in were right up to the wire - on 31 January while we were turning Bournemouth over at their place.

Just because there have been no public pronouncements it doesn't mean that nothing is happening. When we signed Connor Wickham the media didn't find out until the day before

It depends upon for whom time is a critical factor in the negotiation. Clubs know we need a striker so they can play us. Clubs that are keen to offload before they onload might be more time constricted then us. Each player will have a different set of critical factors.
