It all sounds a bit suspect to me. Presuming her partner is being treated for pain in Egypt, why would you bring them 300 different pain killers, that haven't been prescribed, on the off chance, that a friend had given you? And if he's been prescribed tramadol or another opiate, why would you bring him more? It just also happens to be the fastest growing, and most popular recreational drug in Egypt, and a friend just happened to have 300 to spare (rather than take, given that getting them in the UK, requires a prescription). It sounds like drug dealing 101 to me. Buy them cheap in countries where there is supply is higher than demand and sell them on where demand exceeds supply. Price of Tramadol in Eqypt has soared to 15 EGP per pill which means each pill is worth around six quid (or an extra 1798.00 per trip). She also makes a lot of trips to Egypt. Just because you got caught once, doesn't mean its your first time doing it. And she just happens to not know that Egypt, where her husband lives, is in the middle of a tramadol crisis and coinicdently sources 300 pills for his bad back from 'a friend'. Sounds to me, more likely they had a 'reasonable defence lined up' in case she got busted. Pretty Western Women, with reasonable backgrounds, make very popular drug mules.

"It is a class C drug and is only available in the UK with a prescription from a doctor or other qualified healthcare professional. As a class C drug, it is illegal for anyone else to supply Tramadol, to have it or to give it away, even to friends." So even in the UK it's illegal to have it unless you have been prescribed it and then illegal to give it away. I very much doubt you would get 300 on prescription as it's a very powerful painkiller.

The law clearly states that class C drugs should not be prescribed in excess of 30 days of dosage, without being preparied to justify that prescription, on demand, and record that justification. 290 is just within that catagory in the highest level of prescription, at the highest level of prescription - which is above the normal dosage levels, but reserved for treating very severe pain. But its unlikely that someone being prescribed that level of tramadol would just happen to have 290 to spare (what with the pain and all).

We are half way through a 60 capsule (50mg) supply prescribed by doctor (three a day). How someone gets almost 300 that they can spare does make me think. Has she received example sentencing - to deter others or will the next naughty person get twice the quantity of prison?

She was very naive, simple as that, probably would, but will reassess in 3 years time.

Its like getting caught with half an ounce of smack at customs - They've got you bang to rights, all you can really do is attempt to mitigate the severity of the charges and length of the sentence. The irony is that if she'd had a few thousand pills, she probably could have turned evidence and copped a slap on the wrist but with 290 pills its too small scale.
