“Well last year, when it was Christmas Day, Sam Allardyce said they didn’t have to train and they could just go to the hotel in the evening.

“I said to Julian ‘so what are you doing then, staying at home with [your wife] Marina and the children?’

“And he went ‘yeah but where we used to live there’s about four or five people that haven’t got any family over Christmas so I’m going over and picking them all up and bringing them round my house.’

“You don’t hear those stories of Premier League footballers anymore.”

Speroni could very well be planning to do the same this year, with Roy Hodgson’s side one of only two teams not to have a Premier League fixture on Boxing Day.

The Argentine notched his 400th appearance for the Eagles in their 2-1 win over Watford earlier this month and then tied Nigel Martyn’s 111 clean sheets record following the club’s 3-0 victory at Leicester as he continues to rewrite the Palace record books.
