WBA have lacked any real attacking ambition, but defensively drilled they are not. They conceded 2 goals vs. Newcastle, 4 vs. Chelsea, 3 vs. Man City and 2 vs. Watford...all at home. Their last clean sheet anywhere was mid-September at home to West Ham; against whom they too failed to score.

Now, I don't think Pardew has been there long enough to really screw them up by having them try to dribble out of their own 6-yard box, but even with Pulis' defend first / defend forever tactics, they were shipping goals and losing games. That is, of course, why Pulis was fired in the first place. It wasn't the boring football (although that should be enough), it was that there were not the results to show for the drudgery.

There's usually a new manager bounce, but are the players really going to be excited to have that preening gadfly in charge now?

As I mentioned in another thread, Pardew has not lost his opening game as manager at his last 5 clubs.

Rondon's their most dangerpous player IMO...watch out for the inevitable dive in the penalty area and/or surruptitious shove on our defenders that goes unnoticed/unpunished by the ref.
Stop this guy & I think we can win it - going for 2-1 Palace; first goals away this season & first away win.

Opinions that's all it is. At some point a manager has got to last longer than a couple of years. At the moment we are going through them like a dose of salts. Apart from, Pulis and fireman Sam who both walked out of the door.

As for Gayle, thought he did a great job coming off the bench and scored some vital goals. I take it 60 year old Palace fan you weren't at the Villa game on Boxing Day when he scored a screamer with seconds to go from what was it now, 35yrds or maybe even further out?

This is a really difficult one to call. There is far too much uncertainty. It makes Roy's job very difficult: he has not seen this combination of WBA and AP so predicting their tactics is fraught with uncertainty. This kind of situation may be why AP has won first games in the past because opposition managers and teams have been up against an entirely unknown quantity.

I suspect that AP will go in all guns blazing telling them to attack like hell because he wants instantaneous (positive) results to prove himself: this being the opposite of Sam's 'respect the point' precautionary principle. For my part, were I in Roy's shoes, I would be very cautious: defending and trying to catch them on the counter attack, at least until half time when I had had some time to see what the WBA/AP tactics were.
