Old gits. I'm so old my first gig was seeing Beethoven live. Rubbish it was too. He never even finished his last symphony of the evening.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

I wasn't aware of the tit for tat exchanges before I posted that. I thought it was taken off just because of subject matter. It lacked the kind of quality that would get it into gold talk. It was no Bellymans Missus

When and where was wallington's first pub? Some suburbs with homes for families have either never had a pub or only just had one. Carshalton Beeches - never. Sanderstead - never. Selsdon - only recently although I think a shack was a bit down from Aldo's.

Quakers or some such. The Wallington Arms used to be called the John Jackson by the way.

Someone recently told me of some kind of shack a bit further down from the Aldi, on that side. Maybe they got that wrong but they reckon there was a licensed bar there. Roughly or maybe where the makeshift florist is.

The reason for this is that some time ago, both the Atwood family (the Lords of the Manor) and the Rector of the church were against drinking. At the British Library there is a letter from the rector writing to both the parishes of Sanderstead and Warlingham (which lies to the south of the village) calling the latter "sinners" as they visited pubs. I assume Selsdon may have been on the edge of that 'no pub' area. Edited by Mapletree (14 Nov 2017 7.17pm)

I lived in Worcester Park at the time and went to school in Kingston so used to hang out at all points between the two

Edited by Mapletree (14 Nov 2017 7.17pm) Yeah, the rogue residents of Warlingham, sinning in those bars of ill repute off the green with a ploughmans lunch. Good God, heaven forbid Sanderstead should ever go to hell like that dreadful place, Warlingham green. Whatever would they have thought of Charlie Kray living in Sanderstead.
