I remember seeing Michael Mansfield, the barrister who defended Cantona, on TV. He claimed he'd been to Palace before and heard terrible racist language directed at players Of course, the BBC interviewer didn't pick him up on this. I mean: why would Mansfield be able to hear this language, unless he was standing among the Palace fans. And why would he be doing that? Where was he standing? Or was he sitting? Which game was it? I would have liked to see him pressed for details on this. Also, the claim that Selhurst Park was some kind of cauldron of hatred is ludicrous. Have a look at the people around Matthew Simmons as Cantona launches his kick: they're not exactly the cast from The Mean Machine. The media luvvies love Cantona. So all reason went out the window and they were able to retell the story, changing the facts in order to romanticise an incident where a man got sent off for being violent then kicked a small bloke in the stands who got too gobby.
