I wish it were so. How many times do we see this stuff brought out "oh, so-and-so has said something non-PC, he must be a {insert 'ist' of choice here}.

Is Diane Abbott a racist? Doubt it. Has she said racist stuff? Definitely. People (politicians particularly) get questioned by people whose sole purpose is to trip them up, then when they are tripped up, everyone says it exposes their true colours.

People are hypocrites. What they may see as perfectly good for the populous, they may rally against if applied to them (like tax avoiding MPs, people sending their kids to private schools, etc). The hypocrisy I cannot abide, though, is people who choose to use these slips as proof another is a racist, then say it clearly doesn't apply to them when they, themselves, are caught out.

You are right but its all 'stuff' isn't it ?

We give it licence by taking any notice.

For the truth I really can't think of any type of media as reliable.

Just have to see what actually happens and try and work it out for oneself !

100% agree. That is why "point scoring politics" doesn't do anyone any good in the long term. Abbott's disaster on police costing for example - of course she should have known the figures, but she didn't, and felt unable to admit that because people would use it to score points, so started making it up on the fly. As much as I can't abide the woman, that's the fault of the press and the electorate, in that she considered blagging to be preferable to admitting she didn't have the figures to hand.

But back to the dredging up of old comments - you and I don't agree on much (except this, ironically), and may make points to each other "I think A because of this...". If, in ten years time, those comments come up, there's every chance that I've now been convinced that actually B is right (being not personally disposed to intransigence when presented with compelling evidence). If you were to apply the same rules which seem to be in place for old racial comments, that means I'm now lying as my previous comment exposes my true feelings. Makes no sense, other than to prove I thought that at the time.

As an aside, even Southern Rail are cottoning on to the need to keep certain people with prejudices separate.

I was on a train the other day that had an entire section of the carriage with "Ist" on the windows and headrests.

The people within didn't appear to be obviously sexist, ageist, Marxist or racist, although they did have an air of elitist about them.
