thanks Tom. I got binned, with all the other players, after we lost a Se counties games heavily against Millwall. After the game we were told that Venables was leaving the club to go to QPR and taking his back room staff with him, including George Graham who was coaching us at the time. think only one or two were kept on...David Lyndsay was one, I remember, who went on to play a few first team games. And a lad called John Di Palmer who was rated.i ended up at Greenwich Borough when they sold wrighty for a set of shirts. Mick, the Greenwich manager ran a team in the London Kent and border premier division.
I played against a few players..Gary Stebbing...Iain Dowie...Stuart Robson..Paul Walsh..Paul Harding....Gordon Watson...who all played at various levels along the way... Good times to play football. My back was knackered even then!! I loved the Palace team of the late seventies and the ' team of the eighties' with Hillier, Canon, Nicholas, Murphy and the like! glad someone enjoyed my post. And thanks for your kind comments. All the best mate...still in pain with the back but recovering nicely..still reckon i could do a job if tekkers does not recover from injury soon!!

Excellent couple of posts. Thanks and get well soon.

My memory is as fresh as a daisy from the days when you would have played for Palace youth and great to hear the stories from back then. I played against Palace lads as they were still at school. A fair few from Ashburton I remember. If you don't have one but would like one I've got plenty of programmes which will have you mentioned in the results sections. Might dig out the one v Millwall

thanks Kermit. I appreciate your kind response.I managed to track down the programmes that I was in a few years back. House fire destroyed my collection of programmes and shirts back in 2007 and I found some replacements. I went to St Joseph College, Beulah Hill.Played with a lad called Kemmit whose uncle was on the board at Palace... Back is on the mend, just wish the nerve pains in my legs would do one! All the best mate.Up the Palace!!

God, it makes me so angry....I am gonna find a little bloke... I'm gonna have a fight!

Wright has admitted to being slightly gobby. Some would term 'gob-s***e'
You have to give Cannon extra Parish Points for his loyalty to the club. I believe he is still employed in some ambassadorial role.
It was slightly innerving seeing Jim arrive at a CPFC Charidee event about 10 years ago, in a beat up Fiat with his knees up round his shoulders, because the guy is huge and the car so small.
Saw Ian Wright around the same time bombing around on his Harley-Davidson 'boy toy' bike.
Highlights the huge disparity in wages between generations of players.
Wrighty played the game, and won.
Jim was loyal, and drives a beat-up Fiat.

I disengage, I turn the page.

Jim Cannon sounds like a right prick. Before my time so I have no loyalty, but f*** that guy. You can say what you like about younger generations being soft or whatever, but a bully is a bully in any era.

Odd that Roy Keane is agreeing with Wright about bullies. You sure Roy?

You don’t have to be a genius to work out that a tough rugged experienced Glaswegian probably wouldn’t get on with a cocky little full of himself black South Londoner just making his way at the club after a non-league background.

They’re both club legends either way and I shall refrain from abusing anyone with short memories having a pop at Wrighty as I usually would as it’s Christmas

Why is the pathetic attention seeker who paints himself as Mother Theresa raking all this sh1t up again ?

With Roy Keane consoling him. Seriously ?

Wright absolutely battered his teammates verbally during matches throughout his time at Palace as could be heard and seen and was a complete firebrand.

I was told bay a couple of lads who had been apprentices that Cannon, Wood, Nebbeling etc were alright to the younger lads. Not so Wright and Bright.

Wright was horrible, played against him several times.Goby, aggressive little s***e.Found it hard to sing any Wright songs, even at the 90's cup final.Gray not quite so bad and remember one of our lads doing him in a South East Counties Div 2 game in the early days. He had a reputation as a nasty piece of work even in 1980.Same team as Jimmy Carter before he ended up at Millwall.(nah, not the President before the smart arses come out in force)
Played with MAN Mountain Droy for a while at Dulwich Hamlet and he was a formidable man.He never rated Coppell,s man management ( although Coppell had just released him.)Billy Gilbert was a little older than me but destined for greatness, even at 16. He played alongside Andy Massey (who skippered Millwall) in our Riverside Team ( Lewisham), a couple of age groups above my own. My dear old dad (Rip) used to love watching Billy Gilbert from the Arthur, always loved a tackle did Billy. legend. Forgive my warble....I was lucky enough to play against or with a few of our players...sitting here in intense agony after spinal fusion so go gentle...esp on grammar!! up the Palace.....never leaves your veins

Same, mate. My heart goes out to you. I had my laminoplasty on Nov 17th. Still recovering. Mine was for my cervical spine - 1st 7 vertebra but mostly c3/4. You?

Wright acts as though he'd only ever played for Arsenal.

And then when he does remember he played for Palace, it's to bring this up again.

Can't stand him.
