The last time a manager was able to build a legacy was Steve Coppell who had 8 years in his first spell, and had we not been relegated on 49 points!!!!!, the first and only time that will ever happen in the top league, he probably could have gone on and done a Ferguson in terms of years at our club. Indeed up to Coppell leaving us in 1993, our turnover of managers was actually pretty good. We did not have a huge list of managers, a sign of those times i guess when managers were given longer at clubs and showed loyalty as well. Since Stevie left, we have had a ridiculous number of managers. Unfortunately due to the huge amount of TV money now on offer in the Premier, the first hint of a struggle against relegation means that owners are all too happy to pull the trigger now. Look at Bilic again coming under pressure at West Ham. Now we have a manager in Frank De Boer who genuinely wants to build something here. On the recent pre-season tours, he promoted Nya Kirby, a great talent of the future to train with the first team and also wants to bring through the likes of Phillips and Wan-Bissaka into the first team picture. Surely we all want him to succeed and build something rather than keep appointing firefighters like Allardyce to pull ourselves clear, but then they decide to leave and we have to start all over again

Trouble is Steve joined when things were low. Very very low. He was a complete rookie and we had little hope of much. Completely different situation in a league where costs of failure (relegation) are high and potentially very damaging and long lasting. I'd like to see Frank deliver results and his division. But to deliver the vision he'll have to deliver results initially because we don't have £100mil to spend each season or a conveyor belt of talent. If he did stick around for a long time it could save us some good money and mean quality spread around the team, more signings rather than a Benteke or Sakho each season with little left. But of course these days clubs monitor managers as much as players so any success means temptation to move up the pyramid to that £100 mil to spend and an easier path for your vision.

I for one thought that Pulis, Pardew and Allardyce would all go on to build the club. Of course, Pulis was a crook, Pardew was incompetent, and Allardyce retired. And let's be honest, De Boer wants to transform the club but if he succeeds, he'll be snapped up by a bigger team in a year or two (as comical as that seems right now).

If FDB was any good (... just supposing!) he wouldn't be loyal or give himself any specific length of time to manage Palace. He'd chase fame and cash in at the earliest opportunity. Look at what has happened to Southampton in the recent past. Both managers and players have migrated to bigger clubs. Fortunately, FDB is rubbish so that is very unlikely to happen.
