Cabaye looks the most comfortable of all our players in a passing game and when he came on yesterday was the best player on the pitch by some distance. But he's still too deep to be as effective as he could be.

Good job we played 5-3-2 then.

Exactly my point. We played 5 defenders. 5 defenders are not our best players.
Putting an extra defender on the field eliminates a player like Cabaye

Cabaye ought to have started the match. But regardless, when Tomkins got injured the big mistake was bringing Kelly on instead of Schlupp.

Ought to have gone to a 4231 side of:
Hennessey
Ward TFM Dann PVA
Luka McArthur
Townsend Cabaye Schlupp
Beneteke

Then a sub later in the game bringing Cabaye on for Puncheon.

I think we had to have had that first half yesterday to fully understand how bad 3 4 3 or 5 3 2 is for us. Waste of our midfield talent.

It was a godawful 1st half between two teams playing exactly the same boring continental type of football. It was decided by two awful pieces of defending either side of half time by Kelly. Swansea were clearly more comfortable with it as they have played this way for years and we clearly lacked conviction for the style.
Second half was better as we actually started to play with some pace as we had to chase the game. Comeback was never on though as we are incapable of cleanly striking a ball or managing a Tammy Abrahams type of improvised finish.
If FdB wants to play this way then surely Cabaye has to start along RLC and a new signing. Wilf, Andros and Tekkers up front with a new wideman/forward genuinely pushing for a start keeping them on their toes.
Change of style isn't the problem, it's the lack of signings happy in this style that is baffling.
I have no inside knowledge, but something must be wrong behind the scenes for there to be absolutely no backing of the manager. SP has backed every one he's had so far.

So far seen nothing to suggest that de Boer would make best use of the players he has even if we had bottomless coffers.

But that's another problem. The crosses yesterday were from too deep to be effective.

Agreed.
In he 1st half the players didn't seem to have a clue what the next step was after playing it across the back for a bit. They then reverted to hoofing it as there was no creative outlet (Wilf).

Cabaye was absolute class. The way he conjures up those few extra seconds on the ball and then drifts past defenders is beautiful to watch. Without him we have Luka and Jimmy who are fairly similar - break up the play followed by a short pass to someone who can run with it.

The 2nd half we looked much better - obviously Swansea were letting us have more room - but we were looking to make things happen.

The back four looked OK - TFM looked a beast at right back and Joel Ward didn't have a bad game despite his critics.
Jimmy and Cabaye looked good together - like old times - and had we had Wilf on at this point instead of Lee (who tried his best) I would have fancied us to get back in it.

The problem is the way we start matches and having to tinker after the damage is done.

I would love to see more of a 4-5-1 or 4-3-3 with:

WH or replacement

TFM - Dann- Tompkins - PVA

RLC - Cabaye - McArthur or Luka

Zaha - Benteke - Townsend

I'm not one for overreacting so I hope FDB turns it around - but he really needs to get the boys firing very very soon.

Said durring the game yesterday im my opinion (which to be honest is not really worth the paper it's written on, but I'm going to give it anyway) our best 3 players after wilf are YC,RLC and LM and we need to play a system that gets them all in. Now granted that's not been possible so far due to injury so I hope FDB changes and in the words of Mike Bassett today we play 4 3 f##king 3 (ok it was 442 but you get my point). TFM looked good at right back second half so
WH (OR replacement)
TFM,DANN,TOMPKINS, PVA
LUKA
RLC, YC
TOWNSEND WILF
BENTEKE

Would be my choice again for what it's worth. Called it straight away that Kelly would be called to replace Tomkins and was unfortunately proved right, and that hopefully is not a sign of FDB's stubbornness as I really want it to work with him and get some stability at the club.

AGREED, 4-3-3 is one of his stated options, I believe this is also to occur during game play. I don't think all the boys have got the hang of that bit yet.

Also, I think IMHO, we may have to let Kelly go at the end of his contract, the way he is playing ATM, he should go on out a loan !!!
