Food safety you say? Well off you go and enlighten the countries around the world that eat horsemeat how unhealthy it is and don't forget to also have a word with that naughty chef Gordon who served it in his restaurant. I'd threaten legal action too if I were you just to show how very upset and offended you truly are and to Ramsey the point home.

All this talk of chicken makes me wish I still worked near a KFC, I'm hank Marvin right now. Burger King is the closest we have round here but it cost about eight quid to go supersize now. Cost of living issues right there on my doorstep.

Anyone who thinks adopting US practices in food production will bring consumer benefits to the UK is either deluded or on the corporate payroll.

All about the $$$. Public health, animal welfare and environmental concerns - don't make me laugh.

I'm genuinely confused.

I am on no particular side of the fence with regard to washing chicken in chlorine (I don't know enough about the process), but I find it amusing that so many people are going off the deep end in horror that we may allow the process thereby allowing chlorine into the food chain, despite the fact that there is chlorine in our drinking water (which I assume you all partake in), and you'll happily steralise your baby bottles with it, allow your kids to swim in it etc.

In fact, I have to put a home brew on tonight, and I'll probably be steralising my equipment with chlorine-based steraliser.

Is it just because it's america? Just because the EU don't allow it so it's a Brexit weapon? Or just because you are doing what so many people on all sides do in these internet days: reading a headline and charging off as if you are suddenly a world expert

How cute. You're conflating labeling standards and supplychain provenance with a judgement call on the product itself.

Set our own standards, have the sovereignty to enforce our own standards.

As I already mentioned above in this thread: if it's correctly labelled, with the country of origin, and assuming it is deemed safe for human consumption (and from a commercial perspective) there is market demand, then stick it on the shelves.

If it is sold as a Findus Beef Lasagne, but is actually horse, or contaminated with horse, then we have a problem. If you genuinely cannot differentiate between beef surreptitiously cut with horse, and the sale of horsemeat itself, then I can't help you.

Here, let me help you out - I'll present it from the perspective of the anti-Brexit brigade:

Brexit bad.
Everything related to Brexit bad.
If something related to Brexit could be good, find something that could be bad.
Become expert on the bad.
Emphasise bad.
Brexit always bad.
EU better.
Brexit bad.

A UK-US FTA will have all the Remainiacs throw a 5hitfit, because it demonstrates perfectly that we can thrive and grow perfectly well without their beloved EU. They will therefore attempt to devalue any positive news arising from Brexit, and proclaim doom and gloom for each and every trade deal we negotiate. It will never be good enough, it will never be enough.

Let's assume that EU member states must all meet or exceed the relevant minimum EU standard for food safety. It is reasonable to correlate food safety standards with Salmonella infection rates.

Here's some Salmonella stats, incidence per 100,000, taken from peer-reviewed journals, as contemporaneously as possible. It is also safe to assume the worst infection rates within a member state nevertheless conform to wonderful EU standards:

Malta*: 2141 per 100,000 (yum! Winner, winner, Chicken dinner: Caesar salads all round on europalace's beloved yacht)
US: 344 per 100,000
UK: 119 per 100,000
Average**: 693 per 100,000

* There are two worse infection rates in the dataset, but Bulgaria was not a member when the data were collated, nor is/was Turkey, yet.

** based only on EU member states from that data.

So, it looks like you would, on average, be approximately 2.01 times as likely to contract salmonella in an EU-regulated state than you would in the US.

If you were dining with europalace, you'd probably want to bring a bucket of bleach with you (because that's what the Grauniad would have you believe happens), as you would be 6.2 times more likely to contract samlonella than in the US. I'm assuming Malta's chickens meet the minimum EU standards.

Last week, we were all experts on radioisotopes. This week it's chicken. As Liam Fox is currently in Australia, I'll assume next week we'll be terrified that dropping EU regulations forbidding use of boomerangs as defensive weapons will cause street-wars in apocalyptic post-Brexit Britain.

Expect FUD threads like this for whatever bogeyman the Remainiacs deem to be their cause-celebre as a counter to positive news on our path to Brexit.

I know right. That said I believe that Chlorine washing of food is not an EU thing alone. The British were very keen on it (Probably because it protected the UK chicken farmers).

I saw an interview with a woman who was told by her doctor that she had Diabetes and she must change her diet and eat more fresh produce. She went out to buy fresh fruit and veg but there was not one shop that sold anything fresh.

Undeterred, she had a garden, and started to grow her own. She received a bit if attention and to cut a long story short, the local authority forced her to stop.

Your right it was in the inner city.

I remember that story; it was in Tulsa, OK (see below). The issue was NOT that she was growing her own food, but rather that she was growing it out on her front lawn. Many towns and cities in the US have local yard maintenance ordinances that often at least inadvertently prevent 'farming on your front lawn'.

At any rate, it's a lawn-grooming issue, and not food. And those are always city ordinances, not state laws. I can't imagine a state in the Union that would even consider banning vegetable gardening.

Report about chlorine washed chickens.
