A (very) long while back when he was manager at Barca, Cruyff was asked what totaalvoetbal actually was. His response was basically saying it was the kind of football you played as a kid at school but with added direction/tactics/control. On that basis, any professional should be able to play that way - the crux is whether they are comfortable in doing so. Much of it is about interchange of positions which I think th front 3 & midfield are quite capable of, PVA & Schlupp not a problem and Dann & Tomkins have both shown they can when needed. It remains to be seen if they can actually do it at EPL levels. A few quality additions could make next season one to remember for the right reasons.
Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five! |

You may disagree but people like Macca I think are great players but I'm not sold on their ability to play the ball on the deck. There are other players like Papa who I love but a calm head playing out from the back is not how I would describe him, he bombs forward but is rash and is prone to poor control in my opinion. So here is the list. I CAN Cabaye I think thats a pretty acurate list but i think Hennessey will be ok. Remember the team of the 80s Burridge just used to roll the ball to Gilbert or Cannon. It depends ehether our players show for the ball as those two did
Damo MAYBE Wickham I think it's really important that whoever we bring in in defence has to be able to play out from the back. RB is even more of a priority now and I think it is vital we get someone like Davide Santon who is classy on the ball to replace Ward.

Class player especially with one- two touch passing. He will thrive under De Boer.

I hope we're not expecting too much of Mr de Boer or, worse still, that he's expecting too much of us. Our team has many good qualities and strengths, but Ajax we ain't. When we play to our strengths, with Pulis, Pardew (before he went nuts) and Sam (once he'd un-Pardewed us), we do look like a decent mid-table side. And we had the potential to be a bit better than that if Pulis and Sam hadn't decided to chuck the towel in and Pardew hadn't had some sort of breakdown. I'm sure we can evolve, over time, with the right recruitment, into a fixture in the top half, but if anyone, including Frank, tries to do it overnight, we'll be right where we were with Pardew in 2016, except the escape artists aren't available this time.
Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

Completely agree but you'll probably get lambasted for this post. I wanted Pellegrino for more of the same. I think Southampton have made the wrong choice and, let's face it, it was their choice first. But we've got another good quality choice with potential in this division. But, like you say, go for this 'total football' brand stuff could be a monumental error, again. Small changes please, and some of the deep and compact defending de Boer is reported to play vs big clubs. I wasn't bothered before if Big Sam took another job come December. Now I might be. We could do with Sammy Lee not being taken away from us.

I'm wishing to be pleasantly surprised rather than scared to death. It will be a good test as they're all PL sides.

I would think that de Boer will change things if what he's doing isn't working; in twelve months Pardew changed pretty well nothing despite consistent and repeated poor performance and a deteriorating physical and mental squad condition and was still so lacking in self-awareness that he had no idea his arse was oot the windy.
