Rubbish decision...the FA will have Clusterf***s or Poll on the panel as the referee representative and therefore will still be just as biased against the smaller clubs as they've always been!! Wilf will be banned for being hacked down time and time again, yet anyone in a Moan U or Chelsea shirt will not be....open to massive bias. Heard Franny Lee will be the ex player, so presumably Man City players will be exempt from punishment, yet another FA idea that hasnt been thought through properly.

I know this is hypothetical but not without a real possibility it could happen. Just imagine we were at Hull and it's the last game of the season and we need to win to stay up We draw 3-3 and get relegated BUT an FA review clearly shows Snodgrass blatantly diving and bans him for it but the FA say they can't change the result after and we are still relegated with all that it entails.

As Sam rightly says it's rubbish.

Agreed but it doesn't even need to be as extreme as your example to be rubbish. Let's just say the Snodgrass example loses you 3 points through cheating, and then he gets banned for the next two games. If those games are against relegation rivals then they could actually benefit further from your misfortune. Bonkers

Completely agree. That was Sam's point; the 'punishment' has to be made at the time - sin bin is another debate, but yes either sin bin, yellow or red - and that's only possible with instant replays (Oh, I've got to have it)*.

* a 'disco' reference, which posters of a certain age may 'get'.

I don't get what the fear is of an 'instant' decision? The FA are so caught up in sitting back, watching, waiting and discussing, then finally coming up with a smack on the wrist.

There's a suspected dive. Ref stops play (which 7/10 times happens at that stage, ball out of play etc) and refers it to a video ref who is sitting watching the replays that are supplied in 57 different angle by SKY/BT/BBC. Decision made, radioed back, ref either awards a pen/free kick, cards the dive, sends of the player or puts them in a bin liner or whatever the penalty for such an offence is agreed to be. It's hardly difficult is it?

I'm not convinced that sin bins will be much of a punishment. Teams will reorganise for the 10 or 15 minutes that it takes to get their guy back, and it's far harder to dominate possession while attacking in football than it is in rugby (or even ice hockey).

In football, you have to put the ball at risk to try and score, repeatedly giving it back to the opposition by way of goal kicks etc. In rugby, you can camp on your opponents 1m line and simply recycle the ball over and over again until the man advantage pays off.

I'm up for giving it a go, but I think we'll just see a lot of bus parking while teams see out the bin. The only time I can see it making a real difference is if it's the goalie. If you make a substitution to get a proper goalie out there you'll have to make another one when your first choice keeper comes out of the bin. It'll be hard to burn two subs just for 10 minutes of goal-keeping competence and, possibly, you won't have two substitutions left to make.

We don't do possession; we do defense and attack. Everything else is just wa**ing with a football.

If play stops naturally, then fine. But otherwise there's no need to stop play - there could be a video ref who simply watching the TV feed - all angles available on multiple screens - and so should be able to make a quick decision and tell the ref in the middle to pull up play.

The other important component here is communication. Someone needs to be able to announce to the crowd why the game is stopping and what the ruling is. TBH, that would solve a lot of issues between fans and refs. They're mic'd up with an open feed in rugby, why not in football?

Because then everyone would hear the appalling abuse the players give to referees. In rugby the discipline is at a different level altogether

I totally agree with Sam's view that action must be taken during the match even if only when a penalty is awarded, or a 'dive' witnessed: was it actually a dive? if it was (and sin bins not accepted yet) then book the player and give a free kick to the defending team and not a pen. Doesn't hold up play, play is already stopped and move on. If not a dive take the penalty.
If video evidence unclear then award a free kick to the defending team but take no further action.
This would allow refs to award penalties more easily knowing the decision would be checked there and then.

If this is successful then add video replays slowly and surely to other phases of play.

Sounds relatively straight forward to me and would not slow the game up much.

Then the mic would help clean that up. The only reason the players behave the way they do is because they get away with it.

A problem I have is its not going to be equal at all matches.

Even in the PL, live matches have more cameras than others. As managers, players & fans love a moan there are bound to be situations where you can't tell but if there had been another camera somewhere else as in a live match you would of been able to tell better.

What will be interesting is, when a penalty was given but a dive took place but it started outside the penalty so a penalty shouldn't of been given on that reason so shouldn't be reviewed. Will the player still get banned? I presume the player will as that is the decision the ref gave at the time to give a penalty.

All PL matches are live matches. They are all filmed by PLP(premier league productions)which is operated by IMG productions for the PL.I believe they all have roughly the same camera setup of between 24 - 35 cameras depending on the stadium size. Not all PL games are live in the uk because of the 2:45pm and 5:15pm Saturday kick off ban imposed by the FA, but the rest of the world has access to every PL game live.
