Trump and the new South Korean head chap have both said they'd be up for meeting him in the right circumstances. No one wants a war so engagement and conversation is the best route to bringing about a better way of N Korea working with the rest of the world. It might just be the olive branch they need to dig their backwards regime and poor people out of the dark ages. Perhaps they could meet in Munich?

It's a tough call but ultimately the best bet may well be to move 50miles closer and get it over with. I think that's what a lot of people say....I don't think they actually mean it. Anyway when you have kids there survival becomes more important.....hence why I get irritated with the incompetent easy wittering away of the west's advantages over the last few decades. Inaction and buck passing became policy. Well, if the worse is realised the elites get the bunkers while the plebs get the radiation. I'm not interested in outrage and finger pointing after the fact. We must not be put into a situation where an enemy can blackmail us over nuclear war. Those who allow this situation to be realised must be held accountable for it....retrospectively if necessary.

Come on James...the rhetoric is half the fun. As for 'Jack the Ripper' well he got away with it. Chamberlain died a quite unpleasant death while we were still very much in peril. A noble but unfortunately duped actor on the world stage. You see these 'negotiations' with China will result in very little result without the real intent for actual military action on NK. The 'Obamas' of this world just don't cut it. A defensively minded and supplicant west is very much a desired state for China's regional ambitions. I hope you are right about the 'behind the scenes' negotiations with China. That's what should happen but I think it's fifty fifty myself......I don't see NK being easily talked out from a blackmail position myself. Real ball twisting is required. I was thinking Jack D. Ripper from Dr Stangelove. With N Korea, I'd imagine that the only real hope is a negotiated agreement and some shifty CIA work behind the scenes to get the 'right man' in place. The real thing to leverage N Korea with is food, but the problem is getting news to the public, that in return for ending the Nuke program the UN would provide food relief to eradicate the regular famines that wrack the nation and the people. N Korea is a bit like Israel, but with China as the USA in terms of protection of the client state. Without China, North Korea is f**ked - There is no one to trade with. A bit of 'blackmail' is acceptable. its how the world works with military leverage. The US isn't beyond backing up its 'political interests' with some military muscle. North Korea, will demand what they want, the US will demand what they want, and they'll meet somewhere in the middle around what they can live with. Likely as not, NK will settle for not developing ICBM technology and solid state fuel systems that they require, and likely the Chinese will provide the compromise the US wants, and in turn the North Koreans will compromise with China. North Korea will continue its Nuclear program, but restrict the number of warheads they build (mostly because they're massively expensive, and they can't afford to produce too many, or maintain too many).

I wish I could say I agreed with any of your analysis on this topic Jamie. Regardless we are pawns on the board and we will see where the Kings and Queens move us. Quite a while ago I started looking for what I should do for my family in the result of a nuclear attack....I'm probably fifty miles away from the most likely target.....third degree burns at worse, building would stand up and depending on the wind direction half an hour to get underground with provisions....Still, I swiftly discovered that there is no provision for the general public. You can't even easily get planning permission to start building an underground bunker. I think the general public need to start putting pressure on the government for more of a 'cold war' mentality. We need the options to create communal bunkers. Up s*** creek without a paddle. Edited by Stirlingsays (15 May 2017 1.16pm) Well it is kind of a cold war mentality with North Korea. They're sanctioned up the wazoo, with hardly any external trade, with both sides of the last parallel on a war in hours footing. Its a bit like China. Relations and trade in the cold war were non-existent, but over time, slowly but surely, things changed. To the point that the US and China are so economically entwined as to be co-dependent. All of which really started with Nixon of all people.

I know co-dependence is the big 'idea' that many have for ensuring peace....It's behind many of those who back the EU project regardless of its sins and essentially hide behind the UN and its constant deadlock on any action on the world's gaping problems. It ends in the old sixth former's belief in world governance where every problem is resolved by 'jaw jaw'. The idea that everyone is the same and that differences are cosmetic and can be smoothed if we could just do away with nasty masculinity/nationalism and so on. I think co-dependence works up to a point....but it is far from the panacea that some regard it as. Personally I don't think it works. I think it's the ideological projecting their personality type onto others and the problem is that human beings are in fact meant to be tribal and hence combative and not cooperative. I think we have to adapt to human nature rather than deny it.
