Some reading to take your minds off this weekend and whether we have a fit defensive line. I know we're not Juve but reading this piece is interesting in the context of our much-maligned recruitment strategy. We have a lot of slots to fill and I doubt we can afford to buy just youngsters with sell-on value. We don't seem to have the scouting network to replicate the likes of Southampton either. There's talk of Manure discarding Carrick, for instance. Is he a Pirlo-type for an under achieving team like ours? Sounds crazy? Who replaces Cabaye if he goes?

I think each club has a way of operating and history to a certain degree dictates how clubs operate You could point to Monaco and Ajax as examples of successful youth policy. For me, we wouldn't be in the premier without Zaha. We have two other academy products in the top 4 Clyne and Moses. I wonder where those people who said Moses was not good enough for us to sign back? Zaha I doubt would get the opportunity now if he was a youngster now. Experienced players such as Adebayour and Remy have been disappointing. They deny opportunities that I think we need to continue to give. We have history as a club that finds it difficult to sustain top flight success. We need to work out what works for us and stick to it. There's talk here about who we should be signing next season, pretty much all of which fails to take into account that there's no guarantee we'll have Zaha, Cabaye, Townsend or Benteke next time out. And we sure as hell don't have any 'kids' who can make the step up.

And we sure as hell don't have any 'kids' who can make the step up. For starters we don't know if we are going to be in the PL or the Championship. If it is the latter, then for sure we would lose Zaha, Cabaye and Benteke - Not sure about Townsend unless the club want to sell him. Huge rebuilding job in the Championship and I'm not that certain that the job will fall to Allardyce.

Look at that old man Defoe - kept the Mackems up single-handedly for 3 years. Some folk even said Fabregas was past it & that his best years were behind him - could you imagine our front 3 playing with his kind of service? We'd terrify teams when going forward.

I think that's down to our poor choices rather than the idea as after all look what Ibrahimovic has done for Manchester united this season Ibrahimovic is paid 350k a week, and has about 100m worth of talent on the pitch putting it in on a plate, regularly. His conversion rate of chances to goals isn't great, he just works hard to get into positions for a team that create far more chances than he puts away. He'd be s**t for us, because we'd probably create one or two good chances for him per game. If you were playing Benetke in front of the Chelsea Midfield notably Hazard, he'd probably give Costa a run for his money. Defoe, definitely a good example of experience, as was Kevin 'play for ever' Phillips, but they do tend to be the exceptions. But its important to remember that Sunderland set up around the notion of 'getting the ball to Defoe'. Probably one of the best finishers in the game, but he's not really cut out to playing in a more dynamic side that ask more of their striker than just scoring. Bit like AJ, a one trick pony but its one hell of a f**king trick, that he can pull off time and again.

He benefited from us being at rock bottom when played every week in the 1st half of the 10/11 season before Burley was sacked and it was strictly 5 experienced players across midfield. We were at rock bottom, Zaha grew with us and luckily we got promoted and aimed to get promoted after that rumoured car park chat and signing Bolasie in what we knew to be Zaha's final season. What would work for us would be what Sam has done. A few know ns and unknowns including some from Europe or South America with maybe 1 or 2 old heads. The safer we are the more we can play kids. When you're not safe until 1 or 2 games left it's pretty difficult and far from a priority. Years ago the final few weeks had loads of youngsters coming in for teams. When you see some clips you can see how small margins weren't very small at all. A bit like watching Sunday league football in May with everyone hungover. Edited by Rudi Hedman (11 May 2017 5.35pm)

We've been getting rejects on loan because big clubs want rid of them. We need to give Kaikai a chance. No, Zaha wasn't the finished article when he first played but we gave him the chance to develope. Adebayour and Remy have been utter rubbish
