From the NY Daily News: Can this bunch get anything right? Two employees looked at her boarding pass where it said "Paris" and put her on a plane to San Francisco. I recommend that anyone coming to the States use BA, Virgin Atlantic or any other carrier except an American airline. You might end up in Timbuktu, if you get off the ground at all.

Utterly crazy to buy tickets for a flight only to be removed from security due to airline's incompetence re: overbooking. Passengers affected should be allowed to sue.

I don't know why they are allowed to overbook. Once all the seats are sold they should only be allowed to sell standby.

If you take a look at the video I posted, they did sell the seat to a standby passenger. The problem was that the ticket for the seat in question was in the name of a teenage member of the family who'd taken an earlier flight and the family wanted to use the seat for one of their toddlers, as they'd paid for it. If this was a problem for Delta (because tickets are not transferable), it should have been dealt with at check-in and not after the family had got on the plane. Finally the family said OK we'll have both the kids on our laps and the standby passenger can have the seat, at which point a Delta employee said that they have to leave the plane anyway, effectively for having the temerity to argue their case.

I'm having a small problem with videos right now but I read something about it online that didn't explain it as well as you. One day I'll have to tell you what TWA did to me when I flew home in 1991 for my father's funeral. The short story of this was I flew back to London on Virgin Atlantic.

I look forward to reading it Here goes. I arrived at Selhurst Park to steward the ZDS match against Norwich when one of the receptionists came out to get me. My then wife was on the phone to tell me my father was dying and my mother had booked me business class on TWA at noon the next day to fly back to New York. Her company's travel department made the reservation and for some reason Palace Travel couldn't retrieve the info and ticket for me. So, the next morning I get out to Heathrow. It took over an hour for me to get ticketed and I waited over an hour and a half to check my bag. By the time I got out to the gate the flight was closed so first they wanted to put me on flight to Chicago and finally put on a flight to Boston First Class. When I got to Logan I had to wait another hour and a half to booked on a Pan Am commuter to JFK. By the time I got to the TWA terminal at JFK it was 7 PM and both my checked bag and my mother were nowhere to be seen. The "customer service" person refused to page her and I was stuck. Fortunately, I was able to call a relative who got a hold of my mother and she came back to pick me up. She had been at the airport but I when she asked the "customer service" person where I was when I didn't arrive on my scheduled flight the answer was, "How the hell should I know!" Never mind that tWA London telexed a list of bumped passengers from that flight and what happened to them. I know this because when I went to "customer service" there was the list with my name at the top (helps to have a last name that starts "Ba.." Edited by kenbarr (09 May 2017 3.06am)

That's quite a story Ken! Generally it's believed that customer service in the US is superior to the UK, but these airlines seem to be determined to buck the trend. There are, of course exceptions. A friend flew to New York for a long weekend, to join her partner who was there for a couple of weeks on business. She arrived on the Friday, and as her partner was in meetings, she decided to go exploring on her own. Outside the hotel she asked a passing member of the NYPD for directions to one of the many famous sites and was told "buy yourself a street map lady"
