I can see the thinking behind it. Ward Kelly and Damo in the back four against the lightning pace of their attackers he had to even it up a bit. City dont really have a threat in the air so the ball would just have been played around Damo. The second goal killed us we were showing signs of coming back until then.

Accepting the logic that we needed more "pace" at the back, was Schlupp really the obvious choice as a CB? Was starting with five at the back, including Townsend as a wing-back, really a good idea? Wouldn't it have made more sense to move Ward into the middle and use Van Aanholt at RB and Schlupp at LB if we were going to use players out of position? Frankly, we couldn't have done any worse if we had started with Delaney. Man City and Burnley have been two tactical cockups in a row and Sam needs to get it right next Sunday.

I mentioned on HOL as the team was announced that I was wondering if Ward was going to play alongside Kelly in a back four. But of course Ward was played in a 'Three' to start with but this was abandoned after a couple of minutes.Could have played Ward in the middle with Kelly and PVA and Schlupp as full-backs although both of course are left-footed.

Think Ward broke his nose yesterday, so may see him in a batman mask

Delaney and Dann were the first choice pairing during our horrific losing streak and neither seemed capable or organizing the defence at the time

They were also first choice in our great run prior to that losing streak and Delaney has been massive for us since the Championship days. But past history is irrelevant - it's a question of making the best of a bad choice and in this case i firmly believe that players should be in their right position for the good balance of the whole team. Schluup was a fish out of water and that affected Kelly. It was an experiment which didn't work and a mistake in my opinion. Whether it would have prevented a defeat is doubtful but it would've been better for confidence.

I agree. When the nerves kick in being well drilled is essential. Being out of position, like Schlupp was, was a tactical error. Unless of course it was to save Damo getting a card or an injury and not being available against Hull. Remembering that Man C was not a must win game.

You've got it right there in a nutshell.

I understand the idea which I would agree with in principle but Sam has never done that - remember versus Arsenal at Christmas he never saved anyone for the Swansea game and recently nobody was saved against Spurs for the Burnley game - resulting in 4 losses ! I'm sure he just dropped Delaney because he felt Schluup would be the better option (incorrectly in my opinion)

Rolled the dice and it didn't work. I thought it was a good idea, more pace to deal with their attacking players. Thought Puncheon was actually at fault for 2 of the goals yesterday, not entirely but didn't track his man.

Damo fit for next week, perfect game for him to warrior out.

Maybe he's learnt his lesson....
