Being a Category 2 academy, Palace play in the Professional U23 Development League 2, which is split into North and South Divisions of 10 clubs in each. Hull, Watford and Palace are the only Premier League teams to have an U23 side in this league.

Most of the other Premier League teams’ U23 sides (and some from Championship teams), having a Category 1 academy, play in what is now called Premier League 2, which has a Division 1 and 2, each with 12 clubs.

There is no promotion or relegation between the two leagues because the league a team plays in is linked to the academy status. In Palace’s case this season it’s pretty irrelevant because, with the last fixture of this season due to be played next week, if Watford get a better result in their match against Cardiff than Palace achieve against Bristol City, Palace will finish rock bottom of the South Division.

I don’t really know why our U23’s results have been so poor, but I think I have heard that quite often the opposing sides field players that are older, and therefore physically stronger, than our lads.

Its treated as a reserve league by most other clubs and they keep players that are u23 to play right up till they turn 23.

The palace method this season has to been to play mostly the u18s in the 23s league and loan out or release anyone older than that. If they are not playing league football at the age of 21 then what's the point?

Our team has done excellent this season seeing as it's been smaller and younger than almost every team they have played. It's not about results though, it's about seeing if they can one day be good enough to play for us and there are one or 2 in this current crop that look okay!
