Surely points deduction for the not so appy ammers and the toon. Lets say 20 points each. Relegation from their current leagues would be suitable. West Ham in the Champ and Newcastle L1

No player at any club will be a self employed footballer. They are contracted to the club and be an employee. But... That will be just for playing for that club. The boot deals the 'image rights,' and all the stuff around actually training and playing will (it is argued,) not be to do with that employment. That will be run via a limited Co of some sort (personal service or umbrella) and that can be used to manipulate tax particularly for overseas players. Then there is the use of employment products which use investments ot trusts etc than reduce tax. As this is a raid on clubs rather than players guessing it is linked to something they have done or organised

Bearing in mind it's an actual raid I'd be thinking it's to do with agents fees/signing on bonus' etc Edited by robdave2k (26 Apr 2017 12.47pm)

My understanding from evens this morning is this: Players are employed by clubs and salaries are paid as such, subject to usual taxes etc Image rightsand some other additional payments can be paid separately, usually into a company set up by the player, this incurs 19% (compared to 45%) tax and 0 NI There is a limit of 10% of total salary that can be paid to the "company" this was a deal beteen the FA/PL I can't remember which and the HMRC HMRC are under pressure as surprisingly, there has only ever been one prosecution of a "super rich" person for tax dodging. This investigation is part of a task force to redress that

This is HMRC going after evasion, so they will be looking for stuff that has been evaded not avoided It will be things they have not been told about (DOTAS) Arrests are based round criminality, for you to be dawn raided with officers with the power of arrest there, its way beyond the day to day setups involving trusts etc - HMRC use there enquiry powers for those!

The first two football clubs out of many undertaking criminal tax practices. Agents representing footballers need to be investigated as well.

They are contracted to the club and be an employee. But... I'm contracted to a company, and I'm not an employee of that company either. I don't get any benefits from the company other than a day rate for provision of services though. Given the plethora of complex additional payments, its probably true that most players are set up within limited companies that manage their assorted interest, expenses and wages. Possibly run by their agents. Originally posted by orpingtoneagle

That would be a dangerous move - Because they get paid whilst injured, and during the off period. Things like Image Rights etc are taxable income, its really a question of what kind of taxable income it is.

I thought I heard something in the news yesterday that this particularly involved French players and agents?

Yes, there were raids and arrests in France. Both clubs have signed a number of French players over the years, and I think all but one of the arrests are non-playing staff.

Footballers are employees in terms of their wages and bonuses etc but it's the image rights etc that are often payable to the footballer's limited company

In the public sector they are struggling to increase the tax burden on individuals by applying what you suggest.
