8 May 2017 National League Reminder of I think a couple of late goals gave us a chance to get out of Division 3 along with Wrexham. Think Jeff Bourne might have been involved How times have changed

When Bromley got promoted into this league it seemed strange them playing teams I've seen palace play over the years, Wrexham, Grimsby,Lincoln, Torquay, Tranmere, looks like Orient are coming down next season!!

OK 39 years 11 months The HOL write-up of Wrexham v Palace 1977 makes an important error and misses a crucial point. First, the report says that the win secured promotion, but in fact it left Palace just a point ahead of Wrexham, who still had one more game to play - at home to league leaders Mansfield. Secondly, the win by 2 clear goals gave Palace a goal difference of ONE BETTER THAN WREXHAM. The fact that the score was 2-2 with moments left on the clock, makes this in my view Palace's most dramatic ever finish to a match and a season. Had the score 'only' been 3-2, the lead would have been +1 point, but Wrexham would have had a superior goal difference. Wrexham, therefore, would only have had to draw against Mansfield to pip Palace to promotion. Instead, Wrexham had to BEAT Mansfield (already promoted) but fell short, losing 0-1. Mansfield could have 'coasted' but they 'did the business' in our favour. Who remembers the opening fixture of the following season in Division Two....unbelievably Palace v Mansfield, when the Palace team gave the Mansfield players a 'guard of honour' as they came out of the tunnel; applauding them onto the pitch (before then beating them!)? Some team on the south coast was also promoted - in 2nd place below Mansfield and above Palace, but not much more was ever heard of them again, as far as I can recall.
Palace since 19 August 1972. Palace 1 (Tony Taylor) Liverpool 1 (Emlyn Hughes) |

I had forgotten the details
