I think it was a case of nerves. Cabaye is clearly not fit, and so wasn't as mobile, and Puncheon dropped 10 yards deeper after half time. In the first half, we had Luka holding alone, then Yohan and Punch further up, helping to pressure Boro further up the punch and giving Benteke more support. Second half Punch dropped deeper, though Luka and Sammy Lee kept waving at him and Yohan/Jimmy to push up a bit and close Boro down further out. It meant we struggled to keep the ball as well and Boro had more of it. Having said that, we still created some very dangerous opportunities on the counter. Wilf's effort, the 1-2 with Benteke that didn't come off, McArthur's chance straight after he came on, Benteke's two efforts, Townsend's two chances at the end and of course the two penalty shouts. Still, I think closing out a tight 1-0 will do more for the belief and confidence of this team then a 3-0/4-1 win would have. The pressure was constant today but we stood tall and got the win.
Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time. |

The way I read the game was - 1st Half, we went straight to them from the beginning whilst keeping it tight at the back and quite rightly got the lead through this. All it looked like from Boro is they were pleased for it to stay at 0-0 & then 1-0 down. 2nd half - Looked like their manager had instructed them to go at us from the beginning which they did in the 1st 20 mins but not really getting through us to get shots on goal with us reacting to this by defending deeper but Cabaye did seem to go missing, fitness perhaps. Then we started attacking more, their heads going down perhaps with us creating more, good substitutions made by Sam.
The pyramid to beat all pyramids!! Find out what team is in which division, eg which division is Coppull United in? |

I think Sam told them to drop back to defend the lead, because, at the end of the day, the result was the most important thing. Losing or drawing would've been catastrophic.

The performance is irrelevant, it's all about the result. We've deserved far more points than we've got this season, so I really don't care if the performance 2nd half was poor. Personally it was more disjointed in the 2nd, but by no means poor and after an entire year of reversals a show of nerves was to be expected.

Woeful? If we had played as woefully as that in the closing minutes of our earlier games we would now be sitting comfortably in mid-table.

Before you criticise someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticise them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes. |

Woeful 2nd half ,, more how to protect a lead but still create a few chances. Tidy, and most satisfying I say.

Absolute nonsense, tricky 20 minutes after half time, but that is down to nerves, overall great performance especially from the new boys

We still carried a threat in the second half and if the ref had not been such a tosspot we would have scored two or three.

Boro sorted out one of their problems at half time: In the first half Negredo was s***e - never in the box for the set pieces or balls coming in, so they dumped him and put Gestede on. Now Gestede is also pretty pony but he got into the right places which Negredo never did and gave Ramirez and Stuani scope to operate. So in the second half they were harder to deal with. In the latter part of the game we were pressurised into sitting deep and hoofing it up the park, we looked a lot better with Sakho and Milevojevic taking control and spraying the ball around through the midfield instead of just letting Boro bring it back to us. Dunno if taking Cabaye off might have been a factor but Allardyce was right to shore up the defence - as someone pointed out Pardew's answer would probably have been Campbell. And I don't know why they didn't bring their secret weapon - we would all have trembled in fear if we had seen Bumfluff warming up. Wouldn't we? All the above ... except the bit about Bumfluff who had the decency to stay in bed all day. I thought Gestede and Guedioura added a real threat to the Boro attack that we dealt with quite well.
