What I find so disappointing is that collectively this is by far the best group of players we have had at Palace for a very long time. At times they play some lovely football. Why then are we in this mess? It can only be down to organisation, injuries and luck and we have suffered a bad run of them all. As it also seems to me that the quality of the EPL is very high this year, and that the quality goes deep down the league, then we are not finding any easy rides at all. Even the best teams cannot expect to achieve a clean sheet against such quality so us playing for one all the time and just hoping to get the odd set piece goal, is going to result in many 1-0 losses, a few 0-0s and the very occasional 1-1s. Relegation follows such a strategy so I hope that is abandoned pretty quickly. If not then replacing Pardew with Allardyce at the time we did will have proved a nail in the coffin and not a life line.

We had a manager that openly said that keeping clean sheets was not a priority. It certainly showed. And it's one reason we are where we are.

Enter SA who has a different philosophy, but has inherited a group of dysfunctional unorganised players that seemed to have forgotten how to defend as a unit.

Most successful managers ' build from the back '. Even Chelsea weren't getting results at the start of the season until Conte changed their shape.

Keep a clean sheet and you take at least one point. How often did a Pardew managed team draw games ? It was all or nothing.

From my point of view, I think we now have the players in place and the positions covered that we were previously missing.

At Stoke, while not a great performance, it offered a few positives. Compare that with Leicester at Swansea yesterday - I think they have bigger issues than we do.

The voice of reasoned argument in a sea of nonsense. however I would like to add, that puncheon needs dropping, Remi should start against the smoggies.

There is nothing negative about defending and focusing on getting the defence sorted out, because f**k me we really need that.

But realistically of course we also have to win games (as its probably too late in the day to be looking to draw our way to premiership survival). But we won't win games in this league, if we can't defend.

Our defence cost us the Sunderland game, but it was better against Stoke, but against Bournemouth we seemed to get the balance right.

Teams that can't defend, have to outscore their opposition - and if the opposition can defend, then you are going to lose.

Puncheon either needs to be played further forwards as a pure attacking midfielder, or dropped entirely. It was frustrating as f**k to see Puncheon winning a header against Stoke, and Tompkins trying to bury the knock on. Had that been the other way around, I'd have put money on Puncheon burying it.

Well it worked under Pulis, and even under Pardew when he came in. When you look at historically at 'lesser teams that have become premiership' like Stoke, Bolton, Southampton (and to a lesser extent us), then the key has been a strong defence.

Because without it, against quality, you'll concede three or four a game, and have to outscore the best defences in the league.

The art of football is about getting points. Even if its one point, per game, that's enough to keep you up in this league. 1pt per game average.

Puncheon shouldn't be in the team at all. Remy or Cabaye please.

I wouldn't have been surprised to see Cabaye play on Saturday had he not gone off with a knock against Sunderland.

At this stage, Puncheon doesn't offer enough to justify his frequent poor play. He slows the ball down, seems consistently unable to find the right pass and, most worryingly, seems to have developed a horrible addiction to giving the ball away.

Saturday was a slightly different game, but against Sunderland he had given the ball away three times (and just got away with a Cruyff turn on the centre spot) in the first seven minutes.

Employee of the month is a good example of how someone can be both a winner and a loser at the same time.

I am starting to feel that too much work is being to put in to keep a clean sheet and when we concede. We seem out of ideas. I personally think we won't keep a clean sheet against boro. They are one of the lowest scorers in the league. We need a change of pshylosy , i want to see Palace attack boro from the off. We can win a game 2-1,3-2 if the players believe. Come on you Palace.

Thoughts on our obsession to get a clean sheets

Sam worked hard at Sunderland - yes to get clean sheets but also to find ways to play to Defoe's strengths as a small striker, with all too good impact as we know to our cost against sunderland recently. I am sure he is working hard to get similar results at Palace Yes tighter at the back but also scoring goals. He hasnt got there yet, and time is beginning to run out. I think Middlesborough really is a crunch fixture not only because we need th points but also becuase we will be able to see whether his approach is having a positive effect. If the home form continues to be as bad as it has been, frankly we are f......d!

yeah, crosses from inswingers from inside.

I want to see more natural crosses from him so strikers do not have to worry about staying on side all the time.

By natural, I mean if running down left channel, cross left foot inwards, or if down right channel, using right foot to cross.

All this cutting back malarkey is not helping any striker who would be thinking 'will he do it now or in a second'

And it could work for us IF there were more games left, but we need more than 13 points to stay up and that's all we will now get if we just play for the point, and it worked, and it might not even work. I can understand a safety first strategy when a point a game guarantees safety but as it no longer does we have to adapt and doing something which might work. It probably won't but going on with something which would still result in failure, even if it succeeds, is daft. Sam is not daft, so I suspect we will see a change almost immediately now.
