It is easy to sit here and judge but if he was to lose 20k a week for 3 years (should we be relegated and stay down), then you're looking at 3m overall. He has no affinity to us, but lots to them, so why make a switch like that? My hunch is that his confidence is shot and he doesn't back himself to shine for us if we do drop. So he would potentially struggle to recoup that money later in his career. Three million quid -- or even one million if the numbers are wrong -- is a lot for any person of ordinary origins to turn down.

I can fully understand why he turned down the offer that we made but it's a bit silly to then turn round and say that it wasn't about money when he has clearly stated that it was.

I think that's probably more media spin and the interpretation of some on here that he said it wasn't about the noney. If you read his quotes (the actual opinion of the bloke rather than a red top spin) he says it wasn't the right package but he doesn't feel he was being GREEDY.* And I would say on that score: fair enough**. I wouldn't take a 1-3m pay cut over the next 3 years. Would you? *Unless he did actually say "it's not about the money" some place and I've missed it. If so, bloke is a bit on the dim side. **Was never convinced anyway so not too bothered we missed him

Being an old fart - I have been in countless business meetings where the other party started the meeting with the statement that "its not about the money" yet in almost each & every case after several hours of going around in circles overcoming any other objections, in the end it becomes obvious it was completely only about the money.

We dodged a bullet, he isn't very good anyway. Of course it was about money, just as every other contract signed in football is.

A BUSINESS meeting not about money. Now that's an oxymoron if ever I've heard one.

Seems reasonable to me. He is contracted until 2020 with Arsenal. If he came to Palace on roughly the same money he would face a 40% pay cut after only 5 months of regular football if we get relegated. I think in hindsight most people would wait for a better opportunity!
He and his family are lifelong Arsenal fans.

"wont discuss it out of respect for Steve Parish" = just in case they stay up something develops in the summer

It's moments like this that you cringe as a football fan because 30K a week is not enough to be worth taking a risk. Surely that would be enough to run a couple of super cars a big house an expensive wife and put a bit away for the years you will be retired. I would give it a go but if you are contracted until 2020 take it but don't regret not playing your choice. He will already be set up for life so it is obviously about the money.

Footballers are just like ordinary folk in that their life styles adapt to their incomes. Footballers, especially Premiership ones tend to live in million pound plus houses but unlike us who buy their houses over 25 years the footballer will have a three or four year mortgage so his outgoings will be significant
