The whole housing problem, along with reducing the national deficit, could be sorted out simply.

Close the cash cow that is the NHS. Millions of people will die, the Gov will save a shedload of cash, and properties will become vacant.

Added bonus, wages increase.

Systematically dragged down by the lawmakers

Well, the good news is this, globally the number of people aged 0-16 is around 2 billion and on current projections, that is the most people there will ever be in that age bracket. Better healthcare in the developing world means many more people now survive childhood and this has reduced the number of children being born (because by nature, we humans overcompensate). Globally, population growth will purely be due to people living longer, with the population projected to level off at about 11 billion. The problem is no longer people having children at a greater than "replacement" rate.

Of course, we should encourage people globally to reproduce below the replacement rate, to gradually reduce the population and the impact on the planet.

For the UK (and the developed nations as a whole) population growth will be due to a mixture of increased longevity and immigration. Stopping immigration alone will not stop population growth in the UK, due to increased longevity. And barring a "Logan's run" style solution there's not much we can do about that side of the equation.

Not so. Population in the UK has increased as a direct result of immigration. If we cut immigration to a trickle now, the effect will not be felt immediately because of the high birth rate of immigrant children. Aging population has little long term effect on population size since old people don't have children.

And here's another thing.
Birth rates around the world are dropping which is the good news.
The bad news is that it won't stop the population from increasing for about another 200 years. In this time, the world population will get as high as 20 billion.
If we don't insulate ourselves from that impending disaster we are totally screwed.

We live on an island. That is an advantage that we have to exploit.

Please make note of this post because I'm tired of repeating myself.
