So apparently Carl Jenkinson wants more than the 40k pw he pockets for doing nothing at Arsenal to actually play football for Palace, where he could develop his career and show what he can do. If this is true then thank the Lord this deal fell through, as it sums up exactly the trap we are falling into. For the last five years we have been watching unheralded (and therefore hungry) players with a point to prove. Delaney, Ward, Jedinak, Zaha, Bolasie, Murray, McArthur etc. all understood that if they didn’t achieve something with Palace, they weren’t going to get many other chances. We could see it in every performance. They were not on massive wages, had no sense of entitlement, but were determined to grab the chance and make something of themselves. Fans react to this, and support it. The players feed off the support, and we all pull in the same direction. It’s easy to criticise them for being overpaid and underperforming, but it doesn’t matter how professional a player is, there is no way to get around the simple fact that you cannot artificially generate true hunger and desire in a human being. It is an emotional condition, not a contract requirement. The club is making the chronic error of looking at a player and seeing only his level of quality. They are failing to consider what it means to a player to be at a club. We are signing players who represent too small an improvement in quality (Benteke aside) and too great a reduction in hunger compared to those they are replacing. Signing more like this will make it worse, not better.

Agree. I think it's also case of player expects everything around them to be in correct order for them to perform or give effort or it doesn't happen. Townsend requires an overlapping full back. Benteke requires service. Accurate early balls. Doesn't happen from wide with right footed left back or a left footed winger on the right or not playing on the left. Also no central support or supply. Tomkins has slotted into a defence in disarray. Cabaye has issues with an inflated view and having personal fights and stupid fouls given away. A lot of these lay with AP and now SA, but there is tomorrow after hopefully solid work in training. Oh and a leader or a voice on the field in the last few months could've addressed a lot of this cr&p. 'You pick up Toure. Benteke, you defend near post 3 yards off goal line on this corner. Last this penalty.' Etc etc f***ing etc.

But I don't know how you assess that in a player.

Or the ones you lambast were all just s***ly managed and lacking the necessary fitness levels/tactics to perform under Pardew. Or maybe our profound failing at left back has been our undoing and we would have more points with Souare in the side. If performances had been identical but we had 9 more points today but identical performances then everyone would be happy. And the daft thing is it wouldn't have taken much. I have a hunch we'll manage injuries better with Allardyce, our fitness will improve, and -- if we fix left back -- will drift up the table. And these players, Townsend in particular, will pick up dramatically.
If you want to live in a world full of kindness, respect and love, try to show these qualities. |

Jolly good post, couldn't agree more with this and have been thinking about it a lot myself recently. For me the only conceivable positive of going down, rebuilding with hungry players on lower wages.

I think this is where redeveloping the stadium comes in, the state of the ground lessens our credibility, the main stand is a bit like the elephant in the room

Tony Pulis on Football Focus was talking about how he's brought in real quality, Johnny Evans, and top professionals, Darren Fletcher, who give the team a spine and bring on the local youngsters who will replaced by them in the long term - this saves the club looking outside for quality (which fails to deliver bcos of the motivation issue described by the OP). Seems they've got a better model for staying in the Prem than we have.

I don't think the problem with Benteke, Cabaye and Townsend is one of them thinking they are better than Palace. I think it's that they were the wrong signings for what we needed. Cabaye is a playmaker and was purchased at a time when we already had a play maker who was performing well in Punch. What we needed was a hardworking, high energy defensive midfielder. Cabaye hasn't really ever looked like he's fitted into our system and since he came in Punch's form has dipped alarmingly. Townsend is a right winger when we needed a pacey left winger to replace Bolasie. Benteke is a good striker but isn't the sort of striker who presses defences and defends from the front which is what we need. Despite his obvious deficiencies when Campbell has come on in Prem games recently we've actually looked better. Of course none of them is a left back ...
