Great days. It felt like the whole nation was watching Red Rum and Fletch do their thing and they probably were. Only three channels in them days kids, and one of those didn't start 'til about 4pm.

My first ever bet was on the grand national that Fletcher won on Red Alligator. 1971 I think. There was a betting shop next to the Duke of Cambridge in Holmesdale Road who were happy to take my bet. Mind you I would probably have been served a pint in the pub next door given my parents owned the sweetshop round the corner. Rather different times.

Red Alligator won in 1968 - the first GN I watched.
Now I don't have to tell you good folks what's been happening in our beloved little town. Sheriff murdered, crops burned, stores looted, people stampeded, and cattle raped. The time has come to act, and act fast. I'm leaving. |

1973 Grand National...... I had a substantial bet on "Crisp" the joint favourite carrying 23lbs more than Red Rum and he pretty much led the race from the start to just past the elbow. My sister was on Red Rum and screamed the house down as Brian Fletcher drove him to victory in a record time! Very brave jockey, like all NH jockeys are. RIP Brian.
