We will shortly be interviewing Mark Lazarus, one of the game's great characters, for our Action Replay feature in the South London Press. We would like to hear of any personal memories you have of Mark's brief, but successful, period at Selhurst Park from Nov 1967 to the promotion clincher in May '69. Also, any specific questions you would like us to put to the former Palace winger.... Cheers.

Was he ever tempted to follow the career in boxing of his brother Lew Lazar? When did he first start his celebration of running around the pitch when he scored.

He certainly had talent as a boxer. His fists were so fast I never saw them move, just the bloody nose on the Derby County player. Loved watchin him play, one of my all time favorites

He was sent off at Bury after an altercation with Ben Anderson (later to join Palace). I don't know the circs but have heard other players discussing it. Sounds interesting. He must remember it. Need any photos? Below he's bending the ref's ear after Palace v Blackpool Dec 1968 was abandoned after 43 minutes. Attachment: Lazarus.jpg (125.85Kb)

I remember one game when Lazarus was fouled and the referee gave nothing, just gestured to him to get up. Mark got up, ran after the ref and laid down in front of him.
We have now sunk to a depth at which the restatement of the obvious is the first duty of intelligent men. [Orwell] |

Finest bit of skill ever at Selhurst. Ball went on roof of main (then maybe only?) stand and as it landed he sat down trapping it with his arse.

Thanks to all for your responses and comments. Don't miss Tuesday's (Jan 17, 2017) South London Press for part one of our exclusive, new and revealing interview with former Crystal Palace favourite Mark Lazarus. The marauding right-winger, whose 11 goals were a major factor in the Glaziers gaining promotion to the top flight for the first time in 1969, talks very candidly about his two years at Selhurst Park. Now 78, Mark explains why not even his wife could understand why he left QPR for Palace; he lifts the lid on his special contract that included a goal-related bonus; and reveals how he was subjected to antisemitic abuse from opponents and fans. Plus much more. Attachment: 4 - Mark Lazarus today (with Bert Head pic) copy.jpg (255.19Kb)

In our 2,000-word interview, here are just some of Mark's quotes, to give you a taste of what to expect in Tuesday's SLP... "I got a lot of money out of Crystal Palace." "I've read that I used to do a lap of honour around the ground each time I scored but that's a load of crap." "I liked to play football with a smile on my face. I enjoyed the adulation." "I think I could have been as good as, if not better than, my brothers had I stuck at the fight game." "Their centre-half started calling me names and ridiculing Jews, so I gave him a right-hander." "I never had any problems at Millwall. In fact, I used to love going there with all my clubs, because I scored goals there and always gave old Harry a chasing!" "He (Bert Head) left all the coaching to his assistant, George Petchey, but I didn't get on with him from day one and he was one of the reasons why I left to go back to Orient."

Marvellous interview with my first Palace 'hero'. Now know the reason behind the sending off at Bury.
