We always slate ourselves when Britain (or at least our part of it) grinds to a halt when there is a little bit of snow. Seems that it's not always better abroad.
It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark... and we're wearing sunglasses. |

Well, the USA and Canada are useless in terms of driving standards, so when it snows they have the same issues as teh UK - gridlock and chaos. However, go to continental Europe and it's rare to have the same issues as they are well prepared and know how to drive in these conditions, plus the fact that they use winter tyres as part of their culture. Winter tyres have become 'fashionable' in teh UK over the last 5 years even though most people still think they are only needed for snow, which of course is totally wrong. Thirty years ago I moved from the sunny climes of West Sussex to the frozen wasteland known as Newcastle Upon Tyne and as soon as there was a hint of snow the gritters were out whereas in the South East they seem to wait until there is a foot of snow on the ground then try and find where they left the gritter

For most of the UK, the capacity for planning for snow, probably costs more than the two or three days impact it actually has at best each year. The US and Canada, in many areas, snow is a very serious affair, with massive downfalls, and there isn't much you can do about that.

I knew that this day would come eventually!
