What amazes me is how anyone is surprised that if you have free movement of goods, services and capital you then get a surge of poor people following the money. Free trade and free movement would logically lead to a levelling out of wealth across the world. That's why it's unpopular in the wealthier half of the world. But maybe if free trade worked better for poorer countries it would retain more of its population. I'm paying the same for a pair of trousers now that I did in 1980. There is a price to pay for free trade. But rather than putting up walls we would be better off co-operating to sustain people in their place of birth because no one really finds it easy to abandon everything they're familiar with in order to be an immigrant somewhere else. As for Turkey, I live in the UK but I follow its news closely. What it has is a leader who is paranoid, sees enemies everywhere, and is constantly falling out with allies and shifting allegiances, the American's are about to find out what that's like unfortunately. But at least they can turf him out in four years time. To me, explains daftness of the left in a nutshell. On the one hand, making a fair statement that people will chase money and move accordingly. On the other, ignoring people's fears about globalisation, and telling everyone to 'co operate' without explaining how, why or the benefits of doing so. It is a case of 'just do it, because I am right'. And it has always been thus. And will always be thus.

There's no certainty in life and neither the left nor right have a crystal ball into the future. Which leaves people with a choice of trying to isolate themselves or connect themselves. Globalisation has left the working classes suffering a drop in income, which hasn't been the case with the people in the top 5-10% within their own countries. You just have to make a decision about whether you think the problem is caused by immigrants or by the consolidation of power and wealth by that 5-10%. Once you've done that you will either think building walls is the solution or otherwise. You just have to choose between solidarity with your class or with your ruling class.

He'd have got absolutely walloped.
The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money. |

He'd have got absolutely walloped. He might have done but there would have been a contest between two opponents of globalisation. One who has spent his working life sticking up for the working class and one who's spent his life screwing them over and seeking their vote. Would have been a dilemma for corporate America, but my bet is they'd have backed Trump in such a scenario.
