Who here had an Aunt Flo (or what) who was never related to you but would treat you as if you were one of there's (and usually said Aunt would never have children)

Mine was auntie Brenda lovely woman would spoilt me rotten and, I was quite gutted when she died and even more so that she wasn't actually related.

Now I guess that these people were just friends of the family and it must be a generational thing as I don't hear it much often (although our kids have affectionately called someone we know rocket Ron then uncle rocket but they know he's not related)

I had lots of Aunties and Uncles that were not actual relatives.

It was a courtesy title for family friends and neighbours with whom you were too familiar to call them Mr or Mrs Whatevertheirname, but it would have been unheard of (so disrespectful!) to call them by their Christian names.

Then or course there was Uncle Ron - but he only came round now and then about Mum's wedding ring or Dad's suit

All my immediate neighbours I had to refer to as auntie or uncle as Becky said it was seen as a mark of respect to refer to your elders as such

I've asked one or two women to call me Daddy.
