Horses for courses. The right choice for backs-to-the-wall defending but not suited for running forward and overlapping the winger type stuff. As it turns out we are now needing to get better at the latter.

Problem is, there is no one around to take their place. So, for now, he's all we have. I like ward, i have noticed people saying he isn't good enough, but never noticed it myself. I think Damo will be eased out this season - it's a shame Pap is out too. Can't Tomkins play Rb too?

Think this criticism is all pretty harsh really. He's not one of the best left backs in the league, but is definitely a solid performer for us. Like people have said, he was terrific against Everton up against a top quality winger in Bolasie. He probably should have got a bit closer to Cresswell for the goal, but we were clearly struggling as a team with the wing back formation, with Ward effectively having 2 players (Payet and Cresswell) to worry about. Going forward he is so much better than Kelly, who rally does contribute nothing. Ward could have had 3 assists vs Everton: Also, he created the move that led to Benteke hitting the post on Saturday with a lovely step over and throughball to McArthur. He struggles against wingers occasionally, but I personally think he's our best fullback in terms of all round game.

It's when he doesn't track back and dives in at the halfway line I think he gets found out. He commits too early. A valuable squad member but since Clyne we have t had a top quality fullback.

Was class against Everton but I'd say his W Ham performance is more indicative of his form in the last year. Wondering whether in our new system he (like Jedinak) isn't quite suited to it.
The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money. |
