Train from Victoria to either selhurst or Thornton heath (which will allow you to take in and soak up the ambience of the high street pre match)

Thornton Heath is favourite. A public house is just opposite the station - for a reasonably priced post match meal.

Speak to your travel agent or visit the Transport for London website to obtain an Oyster Card (store of money to pay fares as the buses are cash free).

I have not read all the postings and apologise if I have repeated the words of another.

Best wishes

How about taking the underground as far as Brixton, then taking a cab/Uber from there?

Brixton is like Compton in LA.

Might be a bit "dangerous" for an unwary aging tourist like yourself.

Go to Thornton Heath High Street beforehand... plenty of pubs/snackbars for a light lunch. You can easily walk to the ground after.

Go into Croydon after the game for a proper meal and bars/entertainment.... live bands etc.

A black taxi from Hyde Park to the stadium will cost you the best part of GBP100 I'd say. Perhaps even slightly more than that. Up to you to decide if that appeals. Other taxis would be about half to 2/3 of that price.

If those are too expensive, a nice halfway house for you might be to go from London Victoria to East Croydon and get a taxi from there. This would minimise walking.

There are always loads of taxis waiting at East Croydon and the cost should be about GBP15 to Selhurst. I don't think loads of others would do this, so it shouldn't be crowded and would be simple.

A train to East Croydon from Victoria will take about 15-20 minutes and a one day travel card (free tube, train, bus) will cost you and your wife about GBP10 each.

Or just go by train to Norwood Junction and walk. A touch crowded, some away fans and a 10-20 minute walk to the stadium.

You may find your return to the hotel more challenging. For that, I would recommemd walking to Norwood Junction from where you can get a train back up to central London. Hard to get collected by a taxi.

A fit middle aged person could walk to Norwood junction in 10 minutes in clear roads. There will be thousands of people in your way and you can adjust this for your age and health/fitness.

A train from London Victoria to Norwood Junction, no change necessary takes 28 mins.

Perhaps do whatever journey before hand.

A couple of non transport points. First, keep your schedule flexible to allow for the date being changed for TV. A changed date should be known, I think, by end December. The match could be moved to the Sunday, or possibly even the Friday night.
Second, remember that football here is an outdoor game, watched in an outdoor stadium! ( Sorry if you already know this. I have friends in Minneapolis that cope with much colder weather than us, but much of their sport is in indoor stadiums). Thick soled shoes and thick socks are what I advise.
I concur with those who recommend public transport. Train from Victoria, you should get a seat, it will get busy at Clapham Junction, but you and others will get off at Thornton Heath. Leave plenty of time, and grab a mug of tea and something with fries at Fast Eddys on Thornton Heath High Street is my advice.
Have a good day!

I only said East Croydon because he appears to want to avoid crowded travel. But Norwood Junction wouldn't be bad of course and if a little hustle and bustle is okay...

See the reply above which mentions International membership

2) What is a good place to sit, or places to avoid? I'm older, so the less rowdy the better. More expensive seats are ok.

Sounds like the Main stand is the place for you. The atmosphere is still good and you'll get a great view of the match and the colourful Holmesdale stand with our liveliest fans.

3) I'm staying at a hotel near Hyde Park. What's the best way to get to/from the match from there? Can I take a taxi? I rarely get to London, so not familiar at all with the city, or the area around Selhurst.

Unless you are infirm or nervous I would use the tube/train as described above. You will see more of London's life sights and atmosphere and save a fortune! If you do need a cab use the Uber app on your cellphone (we call it mobile).

Most of all..... ENJOY YOURSELVES!

The only thing I would add to this is that as the Main Stand is 90odd years old the leg room is minimal to say the least so if you're larger than average I'd perhaps look to get a seat in the Holmesdale which is more generous with its leg room.
