This morning was linked with watford,as there is no real serious competition for joel ward. He was signed by Alan pardew, a great attacking fullback. Maybe 10m a lot for a fullback but in my opinion he's an upgrade to the squad. Thoughts.

By the end of the window my guess is that more defensive cover will come in, whether Santon or Janmaat

Benitez has signed another right-back in Ex-Malaga player Jesus Gamez. He was signed from Atletico Madrid but I have seen him play for Malaga. Although predominently a right-back he has also played at left-back.

Not sure we're ready for back up players at £10m just yet!

Thought that he was v. poor for Newcastle last season. Made too many elementary errors when defending.

Not up there amongst my faves either. Slips and falls a bit too much. Decent attacker but not positionally sound going back. Perhaps a wing back but we don't play that. After having a look at the squad over here at Philly I'd say he's surplus to needs.

No chance he's better than Joel Ward and the £10mn price tag is laughable. If this isn't a wind up, it's the best evidence I've seen that the transfer market has gone completely mental.

Ward is by far the better player. We wouldn't be talking about this if he hadn't been so unlucky in the Cup final. 10 million for Janmaat seems to be more about Newcastle Delusional wanting to win the bottom line accounting league. That's the way Ashley operates. We got our zero sum transfer (virtually) when we sold Gayle to them to balance out the Townsend deal. Remember, Pardew didn't run the transfer operation when he was up there. He may not, and probably does not, rate the player the way Ashley and Charnley do. I also find it interesting that we were able to buy Townsend given that he was their shining star when they nearly avoided the drop. It shows you that they still value the extra quid over quality play. For me, the question is does Janmaat give Palace better options than Ward, Souare or Kelly? Answer, no way. Plus, with the addition of Tompkins, who impressed in Philly, Palace look even stronger in the back than last season. Nothing to see with Janmaat here.
