I have a undated programme of Palace playing Real Madrid.
Palace team was
Vic Rouse, johnnie McNichol, Roy Little, Terry Long, Brian Wood, Eddie Werge, Ron Brett, Roy Summersby, Johnnie Byrne, Andie Smillie, Ron Heckman.
Real Madrid had Di Stefano, Puskas, Gento and Santa Maria in their team.
Do anybody have any idea when the match was played.
Going by an advert on the back, it must be after 1962.
I don't know if it has any value

Was up on the terracing that is now The Arthur,I'm pretty sure it was to christen the new floodlights. Can remember Di Stefano,Puskas,Hento playing,in fact they put out most of their star players at some time during the match. Was well worth the increased admission price.

Palace paid Real Madrid about £10,000 to play this game, a huge figure back then, and justifiably put the price up to see the best team in the World and 5-time European Cup champions play at Selhurst Park. 26,000 attended in the pouring rain, of which I was not one, being only 6 and with a school day to come. I've never forgiven my mum.

The game was officially to open the new floodlights but they were in use at the start of the 61/2 season.

Here's the Madrid team lining up before the game, the legendary Ferenc Puskas nearest the camera

Interestingly, the club wrote to all English League clubs and invited them to play a friendly to mark the new floodlights at Selhurst. When no English clubs showed any interest, they thought they would write to Real Madrid and chance their arm.

Amazingly, RM agreed to a match and presented Palace with a silver plate to commemerate the match; which is on display in the trophy cabinet at Selhurst.
