I'll go against the grain here. What Gomis isn't, in my view, is a really top notch Premier League striker. He's clearly a step short of the very best. But I also think some here judge him very harshly. In the right side, he's a solid player at this level; one who's capable of 15 goals a season although he'll score some wonderful goals and miss some easy ones and probably go through hot streaks and long droughts where he looks pretty average. Physically, he's a beast but due to his physique, he's also the sort of player who can look really bad when he's having an off day. He's quite skillful for a big man too, although his decision-making is often poor so he doesn't always put his skill to good use. At the right price (10 million) I actually think Gomis would be a pretty good investment and furthermore, he has a high ceiling. In the right side and with good coaching, there's room for him to become a better player. I would not be averse to signing him at all; the sort of player who could do very well at Palace particularly in the style Pardew has chosen to play.

I fail to see how spending £10m on a 30 year old is great business really. He's not going to improve from where he is now, in all likelihood we'd have to get him in on a 3/ 3 and a half year deal on big money, when at most we'd get one good year out of him. And judging by his record that may just be 7 goals for the season. I admit he's probably a step up for now, but I'd prefer us to keep faith with Wickham and look for a younger alternative. A quick one season fix is not the answer.

Plus he's at his best feeding off through balls, which is not how we play.

A big 'no thanks' from me.

Don't rate Gomis at all. He has scored a few top notch goals but goes missing far too often.

Also, I hate that panther/tiger celebration he does. Looks like a right t**t!

Seeing any type of goal celebration would be a bonus at the moment!!

He's capable of 15 goals a season as is Gayle and Wickham...the problem would be that he simply wouldn't get the service to score them....as with Gayle and Wickham.

Whoever signs him would also need to explain the offside rule to him.

I am informed that great minds think alike, Willo.

But you and I of same mind is a very disturbing development as far as you are concerned !

Not at all. I wind you up because of your verbosity, not the quality of your opinions (which often make sense.)

Syd

"Verbosity" to you but perhaps meaningless verbiage to many !

Don't really rate him. For a guy his size and skills he should be more like a Drogba but is way short. Would he be an improvement on Wickham?

All this discussing strikers, very few if any have the vast majority of people's vote. Just shows how difficult the market just below top end is...

Excellent point. Should we go for a striker they have to a marked improvement on what we have. From the candidates being bandied about this season only Remy comes in to that category for me.

He's s***, Wickhams better (or will be)

My mates a swansea season ticket holder and came to the bore draw at Selhurst. He has said on more than one ocasion that he would be happy if swansea paid us to take him.

Useless gert big lumox, however that would still be an improvement on Campbell.

Sun reckons swap deal Gayle for Gomis is on the cards.

Not sure what I think of that. Dwight has an eye for goal but seems too lightweight. Gomis still not got the best scoring record.

Quote Arthur Waite at 19 Jan 2016 9.23am

A powerful player, BUT his strike rate is poor. We need someone to score a hatful of goals and he cannot do that.

The striker you refer to that 'can score a hatful of goals' is either way out of our price range, under contract and his club refuse to sell or he is not interested in joining Palace.
This is why the club (Pardew) are forced to look at stop gap strikers that can do a job like Adebayor and Gomis.
We can look more at long term asnswers in the summer as its clear the Remy or the Babacar that we all desire will be unlikely to come off in this window.
