Bring back hanging, that would reduce the prison population. No you wouldn't, unless you introduced it retrospectively.

Well yeah....but I'm still not giving prisoners the vote. Edited by Stirlingsays (04 Sep 2017 8.13pm) I think its an option, that to some degree we should empower prisoners to have some political representation - Or we start looking a the prison service and probation service as a service with proper budgets, goals and funding - rather than a system to win votes. Effectively someone has to hold the service accountable towards providing the roles that it needs to function in providing protection of society and rehabilitation.

Only by a tiny amount. Proper jobs would have a far better impact. This. Proper jobs, training and education, along with services aimed at dealing with things like illiteracy, anger management, drug treatment etc. A study of young offenders in the US back in the late 90s, found that the single most common difference between young offenders in terms of successful rehabilitation was obtaining the General Diploma of Education in prison. Yet year on year, the UK and US have been cutting funding of educational services in Prisons.

No you wouldn't, unless you introduced it retrospectively. Now you're talking. While we are at it, perhaps we could dig a few of the dead ones up and hang them too - like they did with Oliver Cromwell.
