Cynic or realist? It's a fine line!

I took my wife to the game. We were living in Southend at the time and arrived at the ground very late (only about half an hour before kick off). We went into the Whitehorse end and had to stand at the back. There was no way we could have got any further down.

My wife, who is 5ft 3in, could not see the pitch at all, bless her. Passing her down over the heads of the crowd, like they used to do with kids, was one option I suppose, but I might never have got her back! Being about a foot taller, I had a magnificent view of one third of the pitch – unfortunately not the end where the goals were scored.

I told my wife just to absorb the atmosphere and enjoy the occasion(!), but she swore she would never come to a game with me again. We are still together and I even managed to persuade her to have a season ticket for several years in the 90s when we moved nearer. At least we were able to see the goals on the news after the game round at my mum’s house.

Great piccy Kerms I was in there somewhere to the right
packed in like sardines.

Sardines, that had acres of room compared to any part of Selhurst!

Taking the bungy jump since 1964. Never to see John Jackson in a shirt again

Sorry to see Lee Hills go, did we ever see Alex Marrow? We did January 2013

I got there about 6.30 (an hour before KO) with my Dad. They'd already sold out of programmes. The announcer kept asking us in the Holmesdale to move down the terracing as there were thousands outside still waiting to get in. It'll never be repeated, of course. Great memories.
