Only told my girlfriend about this one. We'd had a row and I'd decided to sleep on the couch, it was over something silly and I knew I was being a knobber but it was just one of those, "I'm not backing down so f*** you moments" Anyway, I was just drifting off on the couch and something wacked me full on on the top of my head that was resting on the arm of the chair which is right next to the wall, so no room for someone hiding behind it. Nothing had fallen off the window ledge, or off the wall. The weird thing is it was a proper wack and woke me with a bit of a start, but I didn't pannick or jump up or s*** my pants, I was half asleep, and said f*** off it was her fault im staying here. Then I felt really comforted sort of happy, and I just got up and went back up to bed, where my fiance was in bed crying herself to sleep, and said that if I hadnt come up she was going to leave and go and stay at her parents. Just to be clear, when I opened my eyes there was no one in the room, and only my fiance in the house. who was two floors up in the master bedroom. All dorrs and windows shut, no one else in the house at all. Can't explain it, I always thought if I saw a ghost or had an experiance like that I would s*** myself, but I didnt, it felt like I was talking to someone I knew, like they were in the room, I even remembered smiling after I said it was her fault, like I knew what I had got the wack on the head for. I'd been through a lot of s*** at the time so was it just a trick my mind palyed on me, or was it my dad, or ex wife telling me to stop being a dick ? Who knows, but I'll tell you what that wack on the top of my nut felt real enough. Edited by dannyh (01 Sep 2015 11.39am) Sounds like Sleep paralysis to me. Stressful states can induce a waking dream state similar to that experienced by sleep walkers, in which reality and dreaming states become merged. Of course that doesn't mean that it wasn't your dad per se, but that the mechanism by which that occurs is catagorised by sleep paralysis. A mistake often made by skeptics is to assume that if an experience can be explained it can be dismissed entirely as relivent; a product of the bias shown to observer-subject science. Experience is always important to the person involved, and can not be viewed objectively by a third party. Thank you doctor Phill. I'd be tempted to agree with the sleep paralysis theory, if it werent for the fact I was awake as soon as I felt the clump on my head I even heard that nose you get when you hair gets moved forcefully on your head. I'd fallen asleep with the telly on, and can tell you what was on when I woke up rubbing my sore nut. The lamp was on, and the room was fairly well lit. I'm 100 percent certain I was fully awake and in control of all my cognative faculties. I wasnt pannicked by it, and as I understand it sufferes of sleep paralysis get well stressed and it occurs frequently to them. Honestly mate when I jumped awake I could still feel the pain where i'd been hit, but in no way was I freaked or scared. Where if it had been you telling me about this happening to you, I'd be like FUUUUUUUUCCCKKKKKKKK THAT s***. I don't know, and where I don't know something I tend to keep and open mind.

I used to experience sleep paralysis a lot, much less so now, and had some very strange experiences, some similar to yours and wake up very quickly (Sleep Paralysis as a experience is a sliding scale, everyone experiences it to some degree, but those who suffer from it are those who 'don't wake up quickly'). Usually the difference between an experience and disorder is the frequency of occurrence, the duration and severity. Ex-Smokers often suffer from short moments of sleep disorder, especially when quitting, as nicotine affects the ACL neurotransmitter, that regulates some aspects of sleep engagement. Of course, I wouldn't say that sleep paralysis means that the experience is somehow unimportant, only that its a means of providing a model that accounts for a number of similar experiences. Dreaming itself is a very poorly understood phenomena. A lot of theories, very little evidence.

Edited by dannyh (01 Sep 2015 11.39am) That's interesting because my assumption, as you said, would be to be s*** scared. Yet that works on the assumption that any 'visitation' is with sinister intent. If you were getting some guidance from a family member or whoever, that had witnessed you being a bit pig-headed, then a short, sharp slap was probably with a caring heart. Supernatural, or maybe a physical manifestation of your own conscious? Maybe there's a parallel universe where you didn't go back upstairs, and your life took a dramatic turn for the worse. Your own Sliding Doors/Shrodinger scenario.

Ghosts only exist in your imagination.
But in biology it is a fact that 2/3 of our brain is dormant, what is that ? that's a myth. we use 100% of our brain. well, some do.

Whilst I was in the Royal Green Jackets, we were stationed at weeton army barracks near Blackpool. For some reason I was staying on barracks for the weekend. Everyone had either gone home or was out on the piss in Blackpool. I remember now I was taking part in a 10k so was resting. Anyways I know I was the only person in the dam building and I heard someone walking in the corridor outside. I found it strange and went to investigate, checked all the rooms and I swear blind there was no one there. You can't be in conflict with yourself on what you've heard or even seen. I reckon there's something. We'll all find out for sure one day.

The '10%' myth is one of the most annoying myths in neuroscience, and widely held and believed, largely thanks to movies and TV finding it as a convenient method of explanation of 'plot necessary phenomena'. Of course in relation to certain neurological phenomena such as 'higher functions' it might be a case that only x amount of the brain is directly involved - which is where I think these myths originate from.

I reckon there's something. We'll all find out for sure one day. You'd think, but actually this is very common side effect of how the human mind works. Attribution error is very common place (we often misjudge information received externally by the senses), because we tend to build a model of what is happening based on what we know and what we are experiencing. Sometimes this creates a mistake, because the mind seems to work not by processing information referentially, but by relationships to our existing knowledge. This system (schema) is very efficient in terms of processing speed, but unfortunately very subjective and prone to making mistakes, in real time. But as the human mind is 'constantly' appraising the situation, it can change in accordance to new data. This unfortunately makes it very subjective to unconscious observer bias. I think a lot of the phenomena is very interesting and of course how 'real' something is, depends on the point at which you define it occurring. Its certainly real to the person experiencing it, and there is definitely a number of phenomena associated with parapsychology that have massively changed how we understand the workings of mind and brain. The mistake often can be found in the idea that we only have five senses (very untrue), and the idea that external senses are always correct, they aren't - they are simulations created from data received through stimulation of sensory nerves, passed through the PNS and CNS, and then constructed in the brain. So when we look or hear something, we don't 'actually see' something, we experience a translation of sense data filtered through our perception. We can actually not see things that are directly there, not because they aren't there, but because our conscious mind and perception aren't 'interested' in alerting them to there presence. Hence we can also find things, that also aren't there, because we're not necessarily looking for them, but evidence of them.

Ha, I'm resurecting this again as I had a weird experience the other night! I was working late, alone at work. I have a small office, with a door onto a general stock area. The lights were off and the door shut to the stock room. Anyway, directly above my desk, to my right, there is a CCTV monitor that shows probably a good 12 or so cameras, all covering different locations. Out of the corner of my eye I see movement. It's one of the cameras in the stock room, which is mere feet away from me. Having distracted me, I'm sat watching the monitor, and just see random stuff slowly falling off the shelf! I'm sure there's a logical explanation... But upon analysis it's hard to define. Internal room, no drafts, no movement, no vibrations. Just me sat typing on a PC. The room looks untidy, but in reality it's an organised chaos. Things are sat IN boxes. So how packaging came to fall OUT of boxes, I do not know. Stupid, but when you're on your own, no matter how logical you try to be, in this situation you decide its time to go home (this was about 7:45 Monday night). I rewound the CCTV and filmed it all today. Hopefully I can upload it
