Private Eye commenting on the previous leaders debate -

The OP didn't say "RIGHT WING press coverage of the election" and has just quoted the Private Eye story.

What it does help to demonstrate is the ridiculous entrenched positions taken up by the newspapers that are then being communicated to the public. The debates (and the campaign as a whole) aren't really shaping the political atmosphere, they are just reinforcing it.

The polls aren't moving. Telegraph readers will say Ed Miliband lost the debate last night. Guardian ones will say he won.

Agreed...but for most of us voters that's what politics has been boiled down to...bickering and mudslinging no wonder kids are turned off from voting.

The Voice of Reason In An Otherwise Mediocre World

It's true. I spoke to one young relative who in part shared that view. He pointed out that most of your successes and failures in life have little to do with who's in power anyway, so there's no point getting too worked up about it.

Adapting to change is vitally important, more so than throwing your toys out of the pram because everything isn't exactly how you want it. Politics in this country has solely become about pointing the finger.

Everyone is always voting for the lesser of two evils, that's what democracy is, that's not unique to Britain. Or anywhere else for that matter, yeah there are problems with first past the post, but the apathy people feel is summed up by the fact that no one voted on the AV refurendum. I feel apathetic, but people's lives aren't bad enough for anyone to do anything about it. On the whole we are in a fairly good place as a country. Most people are full and warm so it bubbles on, doesn't matter who is in charge if it's one of the big parties because it's all pretty much the same sh*t.

Of course im playing Devils advocate here, but you see my point, no one cares enough because politics is so far removed. I like to consider myself interested and hungry for knowledge, but the language used in politics already created a gap. I went to a state school and never really learned about politics, no one really does except those who end up being politicians.

How can people possibly generate change if they have no way in to that world. I think the bullsh*t citizen classes I did when I was 16 was a waste of time, young people should be learning about what things mean for them. You get a group of people who hear the world deficit and don't even know what it means, they think debt. It's pretty much another language and leads to scaremongering and people not knowing what the problems are and just having a bunch of posh w*nkers telling them that X, Y or Z are the root cause of the problems so vote for this colour.

It's all a crock of sh*t essentially, so I do get the apathy.
