I was reading that he was a brilliant youth team player that was sold to Man City before even playing a game - and for £250k which was a record for a teenager in 1979. Never heard of him before.

I don't think he ever played for us. I remember him scoring a terrific goal in an FA Cup Final I think for Man C as I seem to recall a light blue shirt but I don't know the year or the other team. Need to get back to reading the 'Rothmans Yearbook' !

I remember him signing for City.

He then made his debut for them against us in a 0-0 draw at Maine Road on the first day of the 70-80 season.

That's from memory...Willo, I'm doing your job here....I want out !

The equivalent today of Everton paying £15mill for Hiram Boatang. £250k back then was huge.

Was never really worth that but was hyped up on the back of the FA Youth Cup (twice) winners and 'Team of the 80's' kids.

Had a half decent career. Was no John Bostock.

Yes, Steve had a lot of potential and it was lot of money then.
I think it was during Malcolm Allison's time. He was being talked up as a possible England player but never quite lived up to the billing.
