Stephen Hawking has recently voiced his concerns with AI and how it could be disastrous for the human race. It will probably turn us into useless lumps of fat with no purpose, who don't need to do anything because computers will do it all for us!

You've got a bit of a phobia about unions. Why is this? Edited by nickgusset (25 Feb 2015 11.05pm)

The same argument could be made that without us, AI has no reason for existence. Its ok, computer intelligence is a myth, based on very poor cognative models of intelligence that are largely discredited and flawed (ie the brain has no direct correlation to how computers operate). I love the idea that an artificial intelligence will somehow default to an National Socialist Genocidal default - Makes for good movies and TV, but sentience generally requires company far more than it requires mastery. But just in case, I for one welcome our new digital overlords.

I was fascinated to see that these programs were simply told to 'win' and by learning on the fly they mastered what was required ridiculously quickly. Only needs for this sort of stuff to get into the wrong hands...
